BUTTER AND CHEESE

INCREASE IN PRODUCTION. FIGURES FOR NORTH TARANAKI. Dairy produce received at the Taranaki Producers’ Freezing Works from June 30, 1926, to February 14, 1927, represents an increase in butter-fat of practically 6 per cent, compared with the corresponding period of 1925-26. Taken individually, both butter and cheese show increases. 14,679 boxes ani 3462 crates respectively. The total amount of butter received was 158,691 boxes, as against 144,000 boxes for last year, while 140,902 crates of cheese were received as against 137,440 crates. Butter held in store on February 12 amounted to 41,153 boxes, an increase of 20,383, while the amount of cheese in store was 37,372 crates, an increase of 11,537. Since January 10, 20,014 boxes of butter and 23,072 crates of cheese har been shipped to London and West of England ports from New Plymouth. The steamer Northumberland is expected to go into dock at Auckland for repairs next week. AH the cargo except that in No. 2 hold is being discharged at Auckland and will be taken south by Union Company steamers. The Katoa is loading a large amount of cargo for Wellington, Lyttelton and Dunedin, and will sail from Auckland this evening. The Commonwealth and Dominion Line freighter Port Napier (8491 tons), completed her loading operations at Wanganui last evening and left here for Napier. From the Hawke’s Bay port she proceeds to Lyttelton to complete loading for London, Hull, Goole and the Continent, TRADE WITH ICELAND. The Iceland Steamship Company is about to inaugurate the first direct regular shipping service between Iceland and England, states the “Shipping World.” The service will be from Reykjavik to Hull and vice versa. It is anticipated that by this means a regular trade will be established and business between Iceland and England will be greatly increased. BARQUE’S CREDITABLE VOYAGE. The five-masted barque Kobenhavn recently performed a very creditable voyage to Australia. She passed the Lizard on September 29, and arrived at Adelaide early in the morning of December 6 .the voyage thus occupying 66 days only. She proceeded via South Africa, passing the Cape on November 10, and she | actually attained an average speed of more | than 9 knots on the passage from South Africa to Australia, a result which compares very favourably with that of many a steamer. She is owned by the East Asiatic Company of Copenhagen. ORDER FOR BRITISH YARDS. Orders for new oil tankers have just been placed in British yards by the Anglo-Persian Oil Company, Ltd. These are in addition to nine ships previously ordered by the company last year. Seven of the new ships are large 'vessels with a dead weight of over 10,000 tons, the other two smaller ships being of 6400 tons dead weight each. The eighteen orders placed during the year represent an addition of approximately 170,000 tons to the dead weight of the company’s fleet, giving a total of over 700,000 tons. The completion of the new orders will increase the number of the company’s tankers to eighty. NEW UNION CASTLE STEAMER. Yet another fine vessel has been added to the fleet of the Union-Castle Line in the twinscrew steamer Llandaff Castle, just completed at Belfast by Messrs Workman, Clark, and Co., Ltd. She successfully carried out her trials in Belfast Lough in December, and afterwards returned to her builders’ yard, where she will remain in readiness for her maiden voyage to South and East Africa, which is scheduled to commence early this year. She is an exceedingly well-equipped vessel of the sharedeck type with bridge, forecastle promenade, and boat decks above, and has a gross tonnage of 10,786.
