WAINUI-A-RUA SUB-ASSO-CIATION NEW COURTS AT JERUSALEM Wednesday, February 9, was declared a full holiday at Jerusalem on account of the official opening of the new tennis courts. The new courts were in beautiful order, which reflects great credit on the energetic commitee. The weather was tennis weather, and the whole population turned out to honour the “kawanga” of the courts. Mr Neri Poutini, the president of the club, briefly welcomed the visitors. He advised the young people to practise methodically in view of the big Maori tournament to be held, at Wanganui at Easter. Mrs Haarc Taiwha.ti, who donated the area on which the new courts are laid out, then performed the opening ceremony by hitting the first ball over the net. During the day the challenges for the Huia Burgess Challenge Cup wore played between combined doubles representing Pipiriki and Jerusalem Clubs. The other River clubs were unavoidably prevented from taking part in these matches on account of prior engagements in matches elsewhere. The first match was placed between Pipiriki A, represented by Mr and Mrs McLeod and Jerusalem A, represented by R. Nahona and Mrs Te Whata. As this was the first match of any importance played this season, there was keen excitement. Not many strokes had been played, however, when it was noticeable that the combination of the Pipiriki pair was to be the deciding factor, and Pipiriki eventually won The second match was played betwceen Pipiriki B, represented by T. Mokomuarangi and Miss R. Gray, ancr Jerusalem B, represented by T. Marino and Hukinga Potaka. The pace set by (he Pipiriki pair was too hot for the Jerusalem pair, who were easily defeated 6—l, 6-ril. The final match was between the Pipiriki A and B team . From the word gu 1 team resorted to hard hitting, vvi was replied to by the 3 pair. The scores fluctuated, and the excitement was intense. The A team won. A banquet in honour of the visitors was given later, during which the usual speeches were given and the formal presentations of the Huia Burgess Cup was made to Air and Airs McLeod. Singing and dancing followed in the evening, much to the enjoyment of all those who assembled. The next games will be at “'ipiriki and already challenges have been lodged by the Koriniti and Jerusalem Clubs. Mihi Ruihi Tairapanga Cup The first match for the Alihi Ruihi Tairapanga Cup will be piayed at Kaiwhaiki on Wednesday, February 23, between Kaiwhaiki Club (defenders) and Pamoana Club (challengers). Tho former will be represented by Alessrs Don Potao, T. Peina, P. Patea, T. Pauro, W. Simon, S. Jacob, C. Whanarere. Misses M. Hurinui, L. Whanarere, D. Hakopa, R. Whanarere, L. Wikimoa, M, S>nion; and the Pamoana team, will be selected from the following:—Messrs D. Nikorima, T. Wanihi, Al. Pokita, B. Amorangi, R. Pokiha, C. Potaka, J. Alurray, T. Ratana, G. Pukehika. Misses W. Ratana, N, Tuka, L. Wanihi, Airs Amorangi, AV. Pukehika and others.
