A NAVAL VISITOR

FOUGHT AT JUTLAND SOLE SURVIVOR FROM HIS SHIP [ Special to " Chronicle. ” ] AUCKLAND, Feb. 14. A passenger by the liner Niagara, which arrived from Sydney this morning was Commander Marsden, R.N., (retired list) who had charge of H.M.S. Ardent at the Battle of Jutland. He was the only survivor from that ship after she had gallantly thrown her shells and torpedoes at the enemy’s big ships.

Commander Marsden is Conservative candidate against the Communist Mr Saklatvala, who is at present representing Battersea in the House of Commons. The latter is the only Communist in the House, and it is Commander Marsden’s dearest hope that he will defeat Mr Saklatvala at the next election.

Speaking to a reporter Commander Marsden said ho was making a world tour to gain first hand knowledge of Imperial Affairs. He had already visited Australia, where he had been lecturing and talking on tho Empire and naval affairs. He would travel throughout New Zealand, and it was his intention to deliver lectures under the auspices of the Navy League, together with a description of tho Battle of Jutland.

Commander Marsden’s wife, who is accompanying him, is the widow of General Clements Gore, of the Argyle and Sutherland Highlanders, who waa killed in action. She is the daughter of Lady Rachael Saunderson and Mr Llewellyn Saunderson, and is a cousin of the Governor-General of the Dominion.

It was mainly on account of this lastmentioned connection that Commander Marsden and his wife decided to visit New Zealand.
