A POPULAR MAYOR
GAOLED FOR RUM-RUNNING MAY GOVERN FROM PRISON CELL NEW YORK, Feb. 13. At Edgewater (New Jersey) arrangements are being made for the Mayor (Mr Henry Wishel), who was sentenced to a year’s imprisonment in connection with rum running, to continue to govern the city from his ceil in Atlanta Penitentiary.
A great deal of feeling was stirred up when Mr Wishel was found guilty, and a petition, signed by all the city’s school children, induced the Judge to reduce the sentence from two years to one year.
The case, which involved the Chief of Police, who was also found guilty and sentenced to a similar term, has divided the city into two camps, the women declaring that they will petition the Governor to unseat the Mayor, while the latter’s resignation, it is believed, will not be accepted by the Board of Aidermen.
