THE CITY COUNCIL

Sir, —In to-day’s issue of your pap« appears n letter under the signature o 1 Chas. Williams in reply to Air J. H. Roberts. To a certain extent I quite agree with the writer. If the Afayor can do just what he likes ana the Council have no sfay whatever, then it is time something was done—or at least the opportune date will bc in April. But is this the case? I can hardly believe that a body of men such as sit round the Council table fare allowed no say in the running of the city’s business. Has not our present Alayor placed the running of the Council on a businesslike basis by having matters dealt with by sub-committees, instead of being argued out for hours On end at Council meetings? Will we ever htave a Council to suit everybody—especially the Ratepayers Association? I think not. PROGRESS February, 14, 1927.

Sir, — Tn your issue of last, Air J. JI. Roberts takes our worthy Mayor, Air Hope Gil^’ oll -’’. to for this, that and the oiher thing, particularly with regard to th e rating question. He states thtat Afayor says xery little (I pursuit) about Council affairs). I am quite suro that the Alayor will, in due course, make a statement to the burgeases shoer- g the financial position of the city to date, knd I think that, when such a statement is presented, very few people, Air Roberts included, will be able to “pull it to pieces.” It is all very well blaming the Alayor and Council for everything, but who is going to do bettor? This applies particularly to the position of chief citizen of our city. Can Air Roberts point to la man better qualified to be Mayor than Mr Hope Gibbons? What is the use of making tirades against the present Afayor if you have no one better fitted for the job? Will Air Roberts give us light on this point? BUSTER
