AMUSEMENTS, MEETINGS, ETC
“IS ZAT SO?” TO NIGHT What mdy well be described as the. funniest play ever presented in Wellington is the screaming farce, “Is Zat So?” which is attracting crowded houses through New Zealand. From the rise of the curtain till the final scene ■there is not a dull moment. The situations are tanrasing, and clever, while the dialogue is snappy and bristling with repartee that will not be forgotten. The fccting is said to be wonderful, every member of the company being worthy of a stellar role. All who have seen the pldy have voted it to be the most amusing shown on record. The erratic adventures of “Chick,” a pugilist with a soft spot for every attractive girl who looks at him, are followed with interest, by the audience. “Chick” is requisitioned by his manager to the position of footman in a Fifth Avenue house, in order to bring its owner, a drunkard, into a fit condition to deal with his brother-in-law, the administrator of the ftimily funds, who is suspected of being a crook. The bulk of the repartee takes place between “Chick’’ and Hap. Harley (Hale Norcross) as boxer and manager, then as butler and footman. Mr Richard Taber, as “Chick,” proves himself-to be an actor of outstanding ability. •Mary Hanley is the lady on whom “Chick” finally bestows his affections. Mr Hale Norcross is excellent as Hap. Harley. The work of Bruce Walker, a small boy, who takes the part of Martin James Blackburn Parker, is also worthy of special mention. Excellent character studies are also given by Barrie Livesey, Daphne .Bairn, Maude Carroll, Virginia Norton, Claude Saunders, Douglas Vigeors, and Slammy Green. “Is Zat So?” can only be played to-night in Wanganui. The *box plans >are at H. I. Jones and Son’s.
