ON THE RIVER

MOTOR BOAT RACING KAxiE-WAI WINS HELEAN CUP Favoured by excellent weather, there was a very large attendance at the Motor Boat Club’s race on Saturday afternoon, hundreds lining tho banks between the Dublin Street and Aramoho bridges. About a dozen boats were engaged, among them being Kotuku, J. and J. and One Step, and as usual the sight of the speedsters hurtling over the water and the sound of their roaring exhausts gave the spectators an interesting and exciting afternoon’s entertainment. The chief race was for the Helean Cup, a distance of 7J miles. Usually these races are run in three laps of 2i miles each, the boats going out of sight past the Aramoho boatsheds. On Saturday however, a change was made. The course was from the landing at Calver’s Corner round a buoy opposite tho boatsheds and back, a distance of 11 miles, and the course for each lap was twice round. This was a change greatly appreciated by the public, who could see the whole of tho races. Results arc as follows: First lap.—Mr E. Berg’s Petrel, handicap 4min. 34sec, finishing time 18 min. 33sec, actual time 9min., 1; Mr G. Hawkins’ Ferro (14.7) 18.36 (18.36) 2; Mr R. S. Hatrick’s Kotuku (Bsec) 18.44 (4.45) 3. Also started: Karoro, Karewai, Clinker, Pastime, Cyclone. Karewai was first over tho finishing line but was disqualified for starting before her time. •Second lap: Mr Christie’s Karc-wai (7.51) 17.33 (10.34) 1; Mr V. Marks’ Pastime (6.55) 17.51 )10.6) 2; Mr D. J. Reardon’s Karoro (14.4) 17.53 (17.17) 3. Also started: Ferro, Clinker, Petrel, Cyclone, Pennell, One Step, Kotuku and J. and J. Clinker’s steering gear gave trouble and she had to finish at reduced speed. Third lap: Mr R. J. Bell’s Cyclone (5.24) 18.12 (9.42) 1; Mr Christie’s Karc-wai (6.2) 18.18 (10.26) 2; Mr E. Berg’s Petrel (4.13) 18.31 (8.30) 3. Also started: Ferro, Clinker, Pastime, Karoro, Pennell and J. and J. Karoro was first in, but was disqualified for crossing outside the buoy, as was J. and J. which finished second from scratch. Kare-wai won the Cup, the points being as follows: Kare-wai 5, Petrel 4, Cyclone 3, Ferro 2, Pastime 2, Kotuku J, Karoro 1. A race for fast boats was commenced, but only J. and J. and Kotuku started, One Step having had trouble with her engine. J. and J. capsized at the upper buoy and so the race, which was for a trophy presented by Mr J. Wilson, was postponed.
