THE TURF

THE HAWK WINS FINE TARANAKI STAKES CONTEST. MINT LEAF SCORES AT LAST , ORATION CAPTURES THE SPRINT TARANAKI MEETING CONCLUDES (By ‘Early Bird.”) In hot. summery weather, the Taranaki meeting was concluded at New Plymouth on Saturday, and there was a large attendance. The Taranaki Stakes was a splendid contest, with the two favourites well ousted. The totalizator handled £22,720, compared with £28,104 on the second day last year. This made £422500 for the two days, as against £55,249 for the meeting last year, a deerease of £12.749. The flags <n the stands were half-masted out of respect to the memory of F. Towler, who had succumbed to injuries sustained on the course during the running of the hurdles on Thursday. S. Wilson, rider of Nadarino in the •Stewards’ Handicap on Saturday, was suspended for a week for careless riding, Jazz Baby being the sufferer by the incident. A Premising Hurdler. Ardath carried £154 more than Passin’ Through in the Okoke Hurdles, and they justified the confidence placed in them. Pendennis set a hot pace from the outset, and out of the straight the first time wa« three lengths clear of Ardath, with San Fera. Gold Peak, Sea View, Passin' Through and Rehutai following and Take Take (M. Conway) tailed off. Ardath headed Pendennis after passing the half mile and led him into the straight, with Gold Peak next and Rehutai and Passin’ Through coming fast. The favourite retained his advantage to win handsomely by five lengths from Passin’; .Through (who received a check at the four furlongs), and Rehutai was three parts of a length away. Gold Peak was fourth, being followed by Pendennis. Sea View and San Fera. with • Take Take a furlong back. Another Favourite Wins. Partago, Blend and Asleep were heavily supported in the Mokau Hack, and with a change of riders Partaga duly won. Airtight. Troilus. Partaga, Asleep. Always and Blend were in the van in the race for the bend, and into the back stretch Troilus was in the lead, being followed by Partaga and Airtight. Troilus maintained his lead being first into the straight from Partaga. with Airtight. Asleep, Blue Peter, Anolo and Manly following. Once heads were turned for home the favourite drew out. to win by a length. , There was a good contest for second money, Asleep being three parts of a length ahead of Airtight, with Troilus. Anolo. Manly. Blend and Blue Peter next in order. Oration Hangs On. Jazz Baby, making his first appear- ■ ance in open company, was a pronouneed favourite in the Stewards’ Handicap. A good start saw Oration first to hit the front from Nadarino, Jazz Baby, Gaillard and Papaponga. with ; » the last-named pair running up crossing the top. Oration showed the way into the straight from Papaponga, Gaillard, Nadarino. The Lamb and Jazz Baby. At the bottom of the straight Gaillard was nearly up with Oration, but the latter finished on surprisingly well under pressure and beat the Absurd gelding by a neck. Papaponga was a couple of lengths away third, with Nadarino a close fourth. Jazz Baby was next, and then came Merry Jest, The Lamb and Pouma. Considering his first day’s | form and the fact that Roy Reed was : up Oration paid a remarkably fine price. The Hawk’s Come-back. The race for the Taranaki Stakes was a real thriller. Of the four runners Reremoana was a £204 better favourite than Grand Knight, and The Hawk and Silvermine were by no means neglected. The start saw the quartette move together, and after a few strides Silvermine went to the front to lead along the back from The Hawk, with Reremoana and Grand Knight following. This was the order crossing the top and into the straight, j where the two-year-old was a length in front of The Hawk, with Reremoana (on the rails) and Grand Knight a similar distance away. Half way up the straight The Hawk had ranged alongside Silvermine, with Grand Knight coming on the outside and Reremoana moving up on the rails. In a great finish The Hawk beat Silvermine by a head with Grand Knight three-quarters of a length away, a neck in front of Reremoana. So finished a stirring contest. A hundred yards from the post a small dog ran out in front of the horses, and checked Grand Knight slightly, but it is doubtful if he could have got up to beat the two in front of him. Handicap to Mint Leaf. Clarinda was a very hot favourite for the Paul Memorial Handicap, carrying just twice as much as Mint Leaf and First Acre, who were separated bv a couple of tickets. Royal Mint led through the straight, the first time from Crossfire. Opa, Thunderclap. Town Bank First Acre, Clarinda and Mint Leaf.’ Along the back Crossfire and Eoval Mint were running together in the van, the order of the others being Thunderclap. Opa, Mint Leaf, Clarinda, and Town Bank, with First Acre last. Vi Tit Leaf continued his run crossing i the top and was actually first into the straight from Royal Mint, Clarinda,; Town Bank, Opa and First Acre. In |

the run home Mint Leaf easily held his own, winaing by a length and ahalf from Town Bank, with Royal Mint a head away third. Opa and Clarinda : were close up. and Thunderclap and ; First Acre next. Beaten By The Draw. Tea Time carried £4l more than Erin-go-Bragh in the Urenui Hack, despite the fact that the Tea Tray gelding had draw the extreme outside, and it was this that cost him the race. Soon after the release the order of the leading division was Erin-go-Bragh, Skypoint, Royal Acre, Tea Time, Midnight Camp and Turkish Fire. Erin-go-Bragh and Tea Time were together at the home turn, with Royal Acre, Skypoint and Midnight Camp closest of the others. Sixty yards from home the favourite was in front, but he fail- j ed to survive a final dash by Royal Acre, who beat him by a length. Skypoint was another length away, and Erin-go-Bragh, Midnight Camp. Advance Camp, Lady Acre and Glencoe next. A Surprise Win. Jazz Baby’s withdrawal left a bare ; one-dividend field in the Paritutu Ju- i venile, and Melissa was backed as ai certainty carrying £360 more than baby Bun. A surprise was in store, the outsider of the field winning. Goshawk got the worst of the start, which saw Miss Pat quickest to begin from Baby Bun and Melissa, with Helen two lengths further back, and at the half mile there was no alteration, Goshawk being well back last. Miss Pat turned for home two lengths clear of Melissa, with Helen and Baby Bun separated by a similar distance, and . maintained the advantage to win by i two lengths from Melissa, with Helen half a length away third, and Goshawk next, having made up a lot of ground. Form Horse Scores. Partaga’s withdrawal left ten in the Oinata Hack, which proved the best betting race of the meeting. Paitonu ; was the early favourite, but a late i rush set in for Vivo, who was making ' his last start in hack company, and the Nolan Cup winner wound up a good favourite, carrying 150 more tic-I kets than Paitonu, with Billikins and Sovena best backed of the others. Billikins was the first to show out i from Toapaiti, Seastar and Quillfire. : At the half mile Vivo had run into ■ second berth followed by Orcades, Quillfire and Paitonu. Billikins showed the j way into the straight from Paitonu, with Vivo close up. followed by Flying Shot and Orcades together. Billikins i was soon done with, and Paitonu took j up the running. Over the last bit A ivo . challenged, and catching the leader' fifty yards from the post responded under pressure to win by a head. Quill- ' fire, who finished fast a length and ahalf away, was third, with Orcades I close up, followed by Seastar, Onward and Billikins.
