SMOKING RUIN
LEFT BY BUSH FIRES SETTLERS HAVE STRENUOUS TIMES. HEAVY DAMAGE IN SOUTH AUSTRALIA. ADELAIDE, Jan. 21. Bush fires, fanned by a high wind, are sweeping Lyndoch, Mount Crawford jand Eden Valley, where the fodder crop iis one of the heaviest known. ’ A fire passed within two miles of I Williamstown, where it was temporily checked. The wind then changed, land the fire divided into two spits, and j the flames got out of hand. At sunst the wind dropped, and it is anticipated that the outbreak will be extinguished. The damage totals many thousands of pounds sterling. At North Zawler, 25 miles from Adelaide, three houses havo'been burnt and more damage is likely. Residents are fighting the flames, which have a good hold on the ■vineyards and farms.
