THE MIKADO
HOLDS FIRST COURT SEEKS PEACE AND PROGRESS A NEW ERA TOKIO, Dec. 28. The Emperor Hirohito held court at the Imperial Palace Und announced his ascension to the throne. He pledged himself to follow the high example of his ancestors. At the same time His Majesty commanded his subjects to seek unity and harmony at home and abroad, especially devoting themselves to the study of signal changes in world conditions, which demand the unity of the nation in securing progress, though progress must be slow. His Majesty laid down simplicity, originality, progress land beneficent friendship with all nations as the cardinal aims to which the throne’s greatest solicitude would bo directed. The entire assemblage of court dignitaries, through Mr Reijiro Wakatsuki (Minister of Home Affairs) on behalf of the people of japan, pledged their loyalty. This was the last public function until after the funeral of the late Emperor. The name- of the new era in Japan, “Sho Wai,” translated “Glory Peace,” has undoubtedly been prompted by the traditional proclamation at the opening of the Christian era, “Glory be to God in the highest and on earth peace, goodwill. toward men.” The naming occurred at Hymama early on Christmias morning, immediately after the accession of Hirohito.
