COMMENDATION UNDER A CLOUD RAPINE'S SUMMER CUP. ! jLLLOWAY SCORES IN FERGUSON HANDICAP. (Special to “Chronicle.”) The second day of the >jarkland Ka«ing Club’s summer meeting was hold to-day in fine weather, and with a good attendance. The course was in fine order, despite rain last night, which made the going dead. The totali.-nto-handled £65,494, against £51,239 on the Second day last year. Alloway's Gcod Win. cd Mint Leaf was a better fancy than I fcazc for the Ferguson Handicap, kier eria lost a couple of lengths at the start, Haze and Papatu going out to make the running from Alloway and Mint Leaf, with Kani<*hani<*ha heading the others, and they raced in this vr.b r right till the home turn, where Papatu and Haze were still t<»g« ;h< r. followed by Alloway. Mint Leaf and Kam. hameha. Alloway anti Mint Leaf were with the leaders at the di-:.-me. the former staying best to beat Haze I.y a length. Papatu was a nerk away third, with Mint Leaf. Kainehnniclia. Ngarara and Aten-ria next. The favourite had every riinnro. but failed over the Jast furlong. Ah way was well handled and .-print. the leaders home. He i- on th.* :■. pr..\ . . Atereria did satisfactorih after 1..-, ing slow to move. Lysander AH The Way. Lysander had a -ligl t call Grand Knight in the - on the King’s Plate. Lysander began i ' liantlv and put a break of f -ur leng'.l.s on Grand Knight at the i . furlong-, with Phaola just behi:> I. Lysander was still well clear ar the half i.rle. but Grand Knight dosed on him at the turn, but it was only on suffei ::i:<e. the three-year-old corning away to win easing up by three lengths Hom Grand Knight, with Phaola six I •ngth- awry third. Lysander performed brilliantly, and at no stage did Gram! Kr.ighr look like troubling him. <’••mme:: lation was withdrawn on account of a slight fo- t ailment, but the trouble is not soii« uand he is expected to be all right for the Derby. Wedding March Improves. The bracket Wedding March and Cureaform had a bigger following than Kawa in the Ponsonby Hurdles. Peri- . dennis and Kawa mad? the early run- - ning, with Wedding Man h and Penta gram handy. Hah a mile from home Kawa led Pendennis. Wedding March, Archibald, Pentagram and Gold Rep, ,but Wedding March was first round the turn from Pendennis. Kawa ami Pentagram, and he went on to win comfortably by two lengths from Pantagram, witH Royal Form a length ami j •-half away, followed by Gobi Hep. Kawa and Pendennis. Gauntlet tailed off early and was . rolled up at the last hurdle. Mangaewa and Carawock. who broke down, were also pulled up. and Archibald fell [two fences from home. Gold Rep was .plugging on at the end and may win 1 •one at th? meeting, and Archibald was •dojng well when he fell. *• ' Rapine Beats a Good Lot. Mandane, Oreum and Rapine were backed in order for the Summer Cup. When they settled down along the back [Charlady, Gala Day, Th? Thorn and lOreum were the leaders, Rapine being •nearly last. At the five furlongs Mundane, from a rear position, then moved up close, and at the turn the order was Charlady, Scat, Gala Day, Nadarino, Footfall and Princess Ronnie. Mandane shot to the front at the distance, where Footfall, Rapine and Barometer ill challenged, the top weight keeping up a magnificent run to beat Barometer by three-quarters of a length. .Footfall was the same distance away 'third, with Tanadces, Gold Jacket, .(Mandane, Princess Ronnie and Lord Star in order. t It was a wonderful performance on Rapine’s part, for he was a long way < back at the home turn. Mandane had | to make a big run in the middle rtages and failed to see it out. Football ran a fine race, and Tanadees was Inishing fast, but Rua pa pa was very lisappointing. Barometer, who came from nowhere in the straight, nearly irought off a big surprise. * He is al- ► rays dangerous when in the humour. Two Smart Fillies. Eulalie and Auratum carried the hulk of the money in the Criterion Handicap. Autumlad moved first, but High Finance soon went out clear from 1 Eulalie. Auratum, Ti Tree and Ruanui. High Finance was out six lengths from as they turned for home, with Euratum several lengths away, and puanui heading the others. High Finwee tired over the last furlong and i llaiie- got up to beat her by a length k -j a-half. Autumlad was five lengths

! away third, with Ti Tree, Covent Gar- ! den and Auratum next. High Finance showed remarkable speed, but Eulalie stayed too well. The others were outclassed. Aussie’s Fine Price. The Hawk. Tea Bell and Licinius all found solid backing in the Electric Handicap. Deluge was first to begin, i but Chairman and Aussie were the I leaders at the half mile from Ballymoy IL. Nancy Lee. Mimetic and Deluge. Aussie had drawn clear at the turn i from Ballymoy 11., Mimetic, Nancy I Lee and Cawnpor?. and holding his I own in the run home beat Ballymoy i 11. by a length. Paperchase was threequarters of a length away third, with Mimetic, Nancy Lee, The Hawk and i ■ Licinius next. I The winner paid a great price after his forward showing in th? Railway. ■ Ballymoy 11. began splendidly from an i outside position, and as she will be j the better for the race will take a I lot of beating on Saturday. Licinius J was closing up at the turn, but could not run on. Paperchase was going j faster than anything at the end, and i The Hawk was running on in sixth place. Pegaway’s Surprise. Rascal and Le Choucas carried heavy support in the Plunket Handicap. Rascal singled out at the end of a furlong, I , being attended at the half-mile by; Pegaway. Le Choucas, Delightment. | Lomint and Thursby. Turning for I home Rascal still led Pegaway. Le •Choueas, Delightment and Eh Timi. but Pegaway dashed to the front at ’ the distance, and stalling off a run by Mosaic beat him comfortably by two and a-half lengths. with Rascal length away third. Then came Eli ! Timi. Le Choucas. Clarus and Lomint. • Lomint ran creditably, and in the event of rain may win at the meeting. Pegaway is a greatly improved horse and won handsomely. Eh Timi is also ••oniing back and is due at any time. FULL DETAILS. Ferguson Handicap. •Of 500 so vs.; IJ miles,'. 4—Alloway, s.o. T. Green 1 »—i’apatu. 7.0 3 ! Ahu: 1 Mint Leaf. S Rahepoto. < ! THE MARTON FIXTURE TO BE HELD AT FEILDING. ON SATURDAY AND MONDAY. j The summer meeting of the Marton Jockey Club is to be held at Feilding racecourse on Saturday (New A 7 ear’s Day) and Monday next, and the indications point to a most successful gathering. Excellent acceptances have been received for the' opening day, and there are several real good horses among those engaged, ensuring very keen racing. Thanks to the propitious weather experienced over the past month, the course is rolling out in splendid order. The track was very badly cut up when the Feilding Club raced at the beginning of the month, and it was indeed fortunate that sunshine and rain alternated to such an extent that the grass has come away very nicely, and there is now a good sole. A visiting trainer was considerably surprised at the grand recovery the track had made. ►Stormy and Rouex have been scratched for the Marton Cup, in which the fine field of eighteen still remain in. Mr. H. Coyle’s rehandicaps for the first day are expected to come to hand to-night.
