RIFLE SHOOTING

SORTH ISLAND CHAMPIONSHIP j MEETING AT PUTIKI WANGANUI MAN WINS PUTIKI A GG KEGaVr E The North Island championship rifle ■ meeting was commenced on the Putiki ; range yesterday under the auspices of I the Wanganui-West Const Rifle AssociaI tion. About 100 riflemen went down to ; the mounds under somewhat humid conditions. ( The chief matches on the first day’s 1 programme were the Taranaki match. I and the Wellington match. i The arrangements for the meeting i were excellent. The executive staff i under the guidance of Captain S. M. Dixon had everything in order and the first shootists went down for the service match at 7 o’clock in the morning. The chief range officer was Major R. Cade, while Messrs A. R. Sommcrville and A. Greener were assistants. Old Champions Compete Among the competitors were Arthur Blallinger, winner of the New Zealand Championship Belt three times. Mr Ballinger redonated the belt to the New Zealand Association as the Ballinger Belt and is still a keen and enthusiastic rifle shot despite his 60 odd j years. Other competitors are Captain W. N. Masefield, who has always competed prominently at Putiki; Rifleman H. Hunt, winner of the North Island Championship in 1922; T. A. Marett, winner of the Belt in 1905, anil F. J ames. Conditions for shooting were extremely hard and puzzled even the experienced rifle shots. At the close ranges the effect of the conditions was, not very apparent, but back on 500 and 600 yards a swirling left wind swung across the range round the hill point ; and caused a right wind, which was not . indicated by the flags. In addition to i this the wind scooped over the hill on ! the left during the afternoon and ! lifted the shots, thus causing a good j deal of elevation trouble among those ; not used to the conditions on the ' Putiki range. Under the circumstances i a score of 44 at 600 yards was exI ceptionally good. Tyro’s Fine Performance ■ A fine performance was put up by Rifleman C. Welch, a young tyro shot from Kauparoro, in the Wellington match at 600 yards. Conditions were particularly hard on this flange when the squads went down at 3 o’clock. Small scores were returned for some time until Rifleman E. T. King returned a 44. Turnbull followed with a bulldog finish, his sheet for the ten shots read mg 4,5, 5,5, 2,3, 5,5, 5. Then young Welch went down. He cancelled his sighter and then piled on 5,4, 5,4, 4,5, 5,5.4,4,4,5, a total of 45 which won both the A grade land the tyro sections of the match.

Rifleman E. King, of Wanganui, who 1 won the Putiki aggregate, shot con- : sistently throughout. In the Wanganui ; match’ he finished second with 48, followed by 45 in the Taranaki match and ( 44 in the Wellington mlatch.
