YESTERDAY'S RACING

RESULTS FROM ALL MEETINGS TANADEES WINS THE AUCKLAND Cl'F There was racing in several centres yesterday. Boxing Day. and among the events decided were some of the most prominent events of the season. Heavy going at Ellerslie saw a very reduced Held contest the Auckland Cup, victory going to the Trentham representative, the Australian-bred Tanadees. with the consistent Count Cavour and Te Monanni in the places. The Manawatu Cup was captured by Novar, who is trained on the Awapuni tracks. There will be further racing to-day at Awapuni. New Plymouth and Wingatui, and at Ellerslie to-morrow the Auckland meeting resumes. To-day the Auckland Trotting Cup is to be decided.

MANAWATU MEETING

NOVAR WINS THE CUP. SPRINT TO ROYAL DAMON. PALETA AND DOB ALSO BUC- « CESSFIIL. (By “Early Bird.'*) Follow ere of the favourites at the pcaiig day of the Manawatu meeting \ esteruay at Awapuxu received a particularly bad nm, for no; one return ed a dividend. The day was line and warm, and the course, although a bit seft, was in good order. The totalizator handled £52,024, com pared with £57,765 -on the first day last year, a decrease of £5741. Matu' s Surprise. Enare wound up a £162 better favourite than Blood lied in lh«- Tokomaru Hurdles. Hallow morn wx early leader, being followed past ih«- stands by Little River, Lady Passenger, Enare, Matu, Blood Red and Glenidle. Into the back stretch Little River ran to the lead, with Haliuwmorn. Lady l*a+senger and Enare lying handy. The favourite led into the straight from Hallowmorn, Lady Passenger, Blood Red and Matu. In an interesting finish Matu got up to beat Lady Passenger by a length, with Enare only a head away. Glenidle was fourth, and then came Blood Bed (who lost some'ground at the start), and Hallowmorn, with Little River and Pantier a long way back. Comedy Prince fell at the second fence. Powhiri Breaks It. Kalos, on the rails, was a big favourite in the Maiden Plate, which drew 23 starters. Star Chamber made the running along the back, being chase 1 by Arch On, Powhiri, Hymgreat, Conviction, Bonny Louisa, and Barryanda. Into the straight the order was Star Chamber. Powhiri. Arch On. Kalos, Hymgreat, Conviction, and Barryanda. Once heads were turned for home Powhiri drew out to win by a couple of lengths from Hymgreat. with Conviction a neck away third. Barryanda was fourth, the next to finish being Arch On, Star Chamber. Some Lad and Kalos. The favourite would be improved by the race, for he appeared short of a gallop. Inoe At Last. The downfall of the favourites was continued in the Tararua Hack, KJmezzo, a short order, leading for half a mile, only to then drop out. Kilmezzo and Hymill piloted the field out of the straight, being followed by Royal Land. Lieutenant Bill. Catcall and Inoe. Ar ihe half-mile Royal Land had taken sharge, and was first into the home stretch from Panart. Hymill, No Pav»urs, Inoe. Brigadier Bill and Kilmezza. Panart was in front at the half distance, when Inoe and Catcall both challenged. Inoe prevailing by half a length from Panart, Catcall being a similar distance away third. No Favours was fourth, and Hymill and Brigadier Bill next. The latter, who was ridden by A. McDonald, looked a possi bility at the distance, having been given a clear run on the rails.

The Cup Contest. Ten started in the Manawatu Cup. Rapier being a firm favourite, carrying £2105. or £652 more than Merry Day, with Fresco at the head of the remainder. When they had settled down Joy Bird was making play from Rapier ano Kiifaire, and th ? imported mare was ■till in charge passing the stands, being followed by Rapier. Novar. Euphonium, and Opa. with Merry Day well tailed off. Along the back Joy Bird endeavoured to increase her advantage, but Novar, Rapier. Euphonium and Opa

were close up. As they came round the home turn Novar was up with Joy Bird, and they were pursued into the straight by Euphonium, Rapier. Opa. Kiifaire. Perle de Leon and Opa, with Merrv Day hopelessly out of it. At the half distance Novar was clear, when Euphonium came with a rattle on the outside, and in an exciting finish appeared to head Novar, but the judge’s decision went to the latter. Rapipr. who was under the whip over the last three furlongs, finished gamely in third place, a clear length away. Perle de Leon was fourth, and Joy Bird. Kiifaire. Merry Day and Opa next, with Sottano last. Wanganui Colt Scores. Mandy was a pronounced favourite for the Nursery Handicap, and Paleta, Arrow Lad, Tom Braeken and Reckless were evenly supported. At the start the favourite lost ground, and Arrow Lad and Catuna were hung up in the Xapes, both losing many lengths. Reck-

Zarisee and Great Day carried the bulk of the investments in the Gillies Handicap, and once again they were badly routed. Great Day began best 1 from Cerf and Zarisee, but al the end of a furlong the favourite took charge i past the half inile from Lin Arlington, Great Day, Cerf. Bronstell. and Hypnotic. Lin Arlington led ' Zarisee into the straight. Royal Game, i Great Day and Outfit being their nearest attendants. ging along at the end, as was Glenotus. Wedding March was well out from the next lot and should be hard to beat next time out. The Big Sprint.

AT ELLERSLIE AUCKLAND MEETING OPENS. HOW TANADEES WON THE CUJ?. HIGH PITCH WINS THE SPRINT. FOAL 'STAKES CAPTURED BY GASCONY. (Special to “Chronicle.”) AUCKLAND, Dec. 27. The opening day of the Auckland Racing Club’s summer meeting was held in line weather. There was a fairly good attendance. The track was somewhat heavy as a result, of the recent heavy rains, and in consequence there wore numerous scratchings. The totalisator put through £114,658 10s, compared with £145,969 10s for the corresponding day last year. Magna Charta’s Plate. Stormy and Magna Charta were both heavily backed for the Queen's Plate. . The favourites were the quickest to begin, Magna Charta going out to establish a lead of three lengths at the ! half mile, with Stormy next, leading I Archeno, Abbey Day, Haze and Allo-j way. Magna Charta maintained his 1 ! advantage at the turn from Stormy (who was hanging out distress sig- [ nals), Archeno, Haze, Alloway and ; Mint Leaf. At the distance Mint Leaf j and Tinakoa challenged, but Magna Charta finished full of running a good winner by a length and three-quarters from .Mint Leaf, who beat Tinakoa by half a length, the next lot being Pegaway, Alloway, Haze, Stormy and Ar- ' ch eno. ! Stormy and Archeno went well till the turn, but failed to stay. The winner was very impressive and never j looked like being beaten. Haze, Al--1 loway and Pegaway all ran solid races ) and should be dangerous in later hack I events. Mint Leaf was staying on and ' will have a chance in any event beyond a mile, as he will be all the better for the race. Smart Youngsters, Cimabue was at a shart price in the G.N. Foal Stakes, with Laughing Prince next in request. Talisker ; stumbled the tapes w<?re released, i and Agrion was slow to move. GasI cony. Cimabue and Royal Ceres showed out early in front. The favourite was clear at the half mile from Gascony, Ku la] ie, Royal Ceres, Laughing Prince and Agrion. Ekcept that Eulalie headed Gascony at the turn, the order was . the same. Gascony challenged Cimabue at the distance, and getting through on the rails was on terms with, the favourite fifty yards from home, where Agrion came brilliantly, a great finish seeing Gascony get the verdict by a head from Agrion, with Cimabue a neck away third, fol- ' lowed by Eulalie, Royal Ceres, Ruanui 1 and Laughing Prince.

The winner shaped attractively,, but he was favoured by a good run throughout and was lucky to beat Agrion, who made up a lot of ground from the home turn. Cimabue and Eulalie displayed plenty of speed, but the former just failed to see it out. Royal Ceres was always handy and ran good race. How Tanadees Won. Te Monanui, Mask and Te Kara were backed in order for the Auckland Cup. From a beautiful despatch Mask and Battlement went out to make the pace from a bunched field, and at the stand Mask, Battlement, Star Ranger and Desert Glow were in line, with Te Monanui and Clarinda leading the others, Count Cavour being in the rear, but the field was in close order. Star Ranger took charge at the seven furlong and he led at the half mile from Desert Glow, Battlement, Tanadees, Town Bank, Mask, Te Kara and Te Monanui, the field being still bunched, with Kamehameha and Count Cavour in the rear. Tana dees and Desert Glow led round the turn from Te Monanui, Star Ranger and Battlement, but once in the straight Tanadees dashed out. clear, with 1c Monanui in pursuit, and Count Cavour close up. Tanadees held his own in the run home and won decisively by three lengths from Count Cavour, who outstaved Te Monanui and beat him by three-quarters of a length, the next to finish being Te Kara, Desert Glow, Battlement, Karn eu am eh a aJid Star Ranger. There was no element of luck about Tanadees’ victory, as he pulled to the front at the turn and won in fine style. Count Cavour outstayed the others. He was last until three furlongs from home but the pace was not good and he was not far away in a bunched field. The las* furlong found Te Monanui out, but he ran creditably. Mask and Star Ranger gave in three furlongs from home, Desert Glow and Battlement doing best of those who assisted in making the pace. The Hurdlers. The bracket. Wedding March and Cureaform and Gauntlet had most admirers for the Grafton Hurdles. West Abbey, Wedding March and Royal Form were quickest to the first fence, but Cureaform was in charge at the stand from Royal Form, Mia Bella, West Abbey and Wedding March, Gauntlet having fallen at the hurdle in the straight. Half a mile from home Miss Bella led West Abbey, Royal Form, Wedding March and Cureaform, the field being w-ril strung out. Wedding March then closed on Mia Bella and this pair jumped the last hurdle together, but in the run home Mia Bella stayed best and beat Wedding March by three-quarters of a length. Glenotus was six lengths away third, with Royal Form, Carawock West Abbey and Maunga next. High wav was never near the leaders, but Carawock and Maunga were plug-

Limited, the Grand Knight—Nadarino bracket, and Lady Cavendish were most fancied in the Railway Handicap. King Merv and Dave were first to move, but Limited soon dashed to the front and led past the half mile from Pavo, Mosaic, Aussie, King Merv, Kingfield and High Pitch. Limited was still the pilot at the turn from Kingfield, Aussie. High Pitch, Pavo and Nadarino. High Pitch dashed past Limited at the distance and went on to win well by two and a-half lengths from Limited, who beat Kingfield by a neck, the next lot being Aussie, Dave, King Merv. Archeen and Master Dooii. High Pitch did not look like being beaten over the last two furlongs. Limited showed great speed, and Kingfield and Aussie did remarkably well from bad barrier positions. Aussie will be in demand next time out. Grand Knight was never dangerous, but Nadarino was a possibility at the turn, failing in the run home. Lady Cavendish was cut back early and lost all chance. Ruffles was another who failed to go the early pace, and the Currie backlet (Deluge and The Thom) was also disappointing. A Smart Two-Year-Old. Cosmetic was a warm favourite for the Nursery Handicap, with Panther and Paganelli each having a good fqlJowing. Panther was first to break the line, being followed at the end of a furlong by Exalted, Golden Wedding, Pagan elli, Segment and Cosmetic. Golden Wedding ran up to Panther at the turn, with Paganelli, Doree and Cosmetic all handy. Panther was. clear again at the furlong post, where Cosmetic came along and smothered the others lor {pace, going on to beat Panther by two lengths, with Paganelli a length and ahalf away third, followed by Autum- , lad, Flying Tresses and Doree. Cosmetic is very speedy, and would beat the others with a good rise in weight. Outside the placed horses there was nothing impressive. Panther was running on again at the end, and may do beter with the race. Day Guard’s Mild Surprise. ! Charmour and True Blood were both I heavily backed in a good pool in the j Christinas Handicap. Day Guard was ; soon in front, Chamour being slow to move, the former being clear at the half mile from Seatown, Automne, Phaola and True Blood, and they raced in similar order at the turn. Day Guard was still clear at the distance, and stalling off a run by True Blood beat him by three-quarters of a length. Rascal was a neck away third, ' and* then came Seatown, Phaola, Cham- . our and Automne. Day Guard set a fast pace and had the othars scratching throughout. True Blood finished with the utmost gameness, and Chamour did well after a bad passage. Seatown had every chance, but could not concede the weight to the others. Rascal made a good run in the straight, but was tiring again at the end.
