BOROUGH COUNCIL (From the “Chronicle’s” Special Correspondent). At the Ractihi Borough Council’s monthly meeting the Mayor, Mr. }I. Sandford presided, and Councillors W. Harris, A. W. Ash well, W. G. Russell, G. Anderson, A. J. Windle, R. Sigley, T. Tagg, and A. G. Laloli were present. On behalf of the Sports Club Air. C. A. C. Macdonald informed the Council that there was plenty of room for a children’s playground without interfering with the football ground. It was resolved that Cr. Harris confer with Mr. F. Glasgow (football club) and Mr Macdonald respecting the playground and the erection of swings etc., for the children, with power to act.

Messrs J France and L. J. Vile representing the Chamber of Commerce waited upon the’ Council in regard to a motor tourists’ camping ground. They suggested the reserve on Parapara Road, opposite the recreation grounds as the most suitable site, and asked if the Council would confer with the Chamber of Commerce. After the matter had been discussed the Council decided to grant the request and left the matter in the hands of the Reserve Committee to deal with. Two tenders were received for the surfacing of Seddon Street, roadway and footpaths. The tender of The British Pavements Limited, for a tarred macadam with bitumen seal coat was accepted, provisions regarding same to bo drawn up and submitted to Council’s solicitor.

The Bank of New Zealand advised the Council that the loan of £15,565 had been fully subscribed, with the exception of the odd £65.

The Chamber of Commerce wrote asking if the Council’s engineer would

supply any information he had concerning community lighting and the cost. Mr. C. C. Nation complained that since the subsidence of the culvert near his property, after a heavy rainfall the water backed up and flooded his section. It was resolved to ask the County Council if they had any objection to the surface water being diverted into a creek which flows through the County’s culvert. The Ractihi Auto Coy. applied for permission to instal an underground benzine tank and kerbside pump. The application wns granted. The engineer was authorised to order material required for switch board at power house amounting to £5O. Accounts amounting to £1920 16s Id were passed for payment, subject to the approval of the Finance Committee. Outstanding accounts, amounting to £260 Os 6d, being bad debts and amounts charged in error, were struck off as be'ing uncillectable. Outstanding rates for the years ending March 31, 1921, and March 31, 1922, amounting to £96 14s 2d and £62 5s 3d respectively, were struck off.
