IN STORM-SWEPT STATES DAMAGE TOTALS MANY MILLIONS ENORMOUS GRAIN AND CROP LOSSES Received Sept. 5, 11.30 p.m. NEW YORK, Sept. 4. Ai Chicago message says that the States of Illinois, lowa, Nebraska, Kansas, Missouri and Indiana began taking stock to-day of the heavylosses caused through the floods, winds, 'and storms which have been sweeping these States during the past four days, resulting in four deaths and many millions of dollars worth of damage to property. Streets, houses and many towns, power and light plants and railway Vards have been destroyed over areas of many square miles. Crop damage, however, has been the heaviest. Agricultural agents who surveyed the destruction in the four principal maize-growing Statps, doubt whether the saturated fields will dry out in time for the late crops to mature before the frost arrives. Losses in grtain in the fields have been enormous, and young stock, particularly pigs and poultry, has in many districts been killed. The Mississippi River in many places has risen two feet in 24 hours. Several cities are without light, while others are without drinking water, the pumping stations hlaving failed. Meteorological reports indicate further rains and wind disturbances.
