RANGITIKEI RUGBY. CLOSE GAMES ON SATURDAY. SENIOR RESULTS. Rato 12, Athletic 11. Marton 6, Bulls 5. Rata v. Athletic. Rata and Athletic provided a stirring contest at Marton Park, Athletic being in a winning position up to three minutes before time. On the day’s play A/thletic deserved to win, their forwards with Stevens lalwajrs in the Ifcnolight, doing great work, and had it not been for G. Hartley Rata would have cut a sorry figure indeed. Rata’s score was made up of 4 unconverted tries and Athletic’s of 3 tries, one of which was converted.

Rato started out to make the game an open one, and a passing bout in which all the Rata backs handled saw Dalziell make a bid for the line, but he was thrown out near the corner. Another movement wtis spoilt when Pcina sent an impossible pass to G. Hartley. A little later Hartley put in a good run. but Falwasser intercepted. A nice centring kick spelt disaster for Rata. Norris took his kick on the bounce but miskicked and the Athletic forwards swarmed on to Rato’s line, whore MeSwecny picked up and dived across. Falwasser failed to convert. Some exciting play followed, and then G.'Hartley broke away and after running a considerable distance transferred to Gibbs, who scored, close to the posts. J. Potaka failed with an easy kick. Rata backs were now set moving repeatedly and from a good movement Peina scored. Terry’s kick from well out hit the upright. Early in the second half Athletic attacked and from a serum Stevens secured and running strongly went over for a splendid try, which Falwasser converted. Almost immediately the Athletic forwards raided Rata’s territory and Masson, following up tost, slipped across, Falwasser’s kick was disallowed. Each side attacked, and eventually a weak kick by Conder allowed the Rata backs to get moving and la line movement ended in Dalziell scoring. Terry’s kick just missed. Athletic made a raid, but "t was only a temporary dash, and Rata returned play to the other end, where lafter a good back movement Anderson scored for Rata. Terry failed to convert. Mr F. Martin was referee. Marton v. Bulls. Marton seniors defeated Bulls at Marton Park by 6 points (2 penalty goals) to 5 (ta converted try). The match was played as a curtain-raiser to the Rata-Athletic game. Bulls played with fourteen men throughout and put up <a very good fight. Bulls were the first to press, Stuart leading the black forwards downfield, and compelling Marton to force. Bulls continued to attack, and on one occasion Fitches through weak tackling went nearly through the Aflarton team. At last Marton took a hand in attack, and a couple of shots at goal missed. The pulls backs were nearly over, bur Gibbons led the red land white forwards down field. Whisker in endeavouring to save his side lay on the ball and from the resultant penalty Thompson kicked a splendid goal. Marton forwards opened the second spell with an attock. A free in a handy position saw Thompson miss the easiest of kicks. Bulls were similarly unfortunate, and when their backs got going the defence held. Just when things were beginning I to look bad for Marton Parks intcr- ; cepted nicely and saved, nipping a proI mising movement in the bud. Bulls I were not to be denied, however, and their efforts were rewarded when Clarke picked up and dived across. J. Eru converted. Marton attacked, but were driven back to half way, where for obstruction Marton were awarded a free land from right on the half-way line Thompson kicked a magnificent goal, the bad hitting the bar and bouncing over. Bulls made desperate. ! attempts to even up the scores and just on time they were nearly over, Preston [ forcing in the nick of time. Mr W. . Knox wtas referee.
