UNFAIR TACTICS
CHARGE AGAINST PRESS CRITICISM OF DAIRY CONTROI* ADDRESS BY MR. GROUNDS. (Per Prens Asioclatlon. J DUNEDIN, June 2. The annual meeting of the South Inland Dairy Association was held to-day, when the representatives of the dairy factories had only a small agenda paper to consider. Considerable discussion took place on the question of obtaining a better award for dairy factory employees, and delegates were appointed to attend a conference at Wellington which the question of tho feasibility of forming a Dominion award would be discussed. The question of tho responsibility of factories in connection with pollution of streams was discussed, and the point raised as to whether factories should only be responsible for any actual damage that should occur, as apart from what was termed chemical pollution. The president, Mr. 11. J. Middleton, said ho had discussed the matter with the Hon. O. J. Hawken, Minister of Agriculture, and the latter had informed him that it was hopeless to expect any relief through legislation. Mr. Hawken had, in fact, stated that he hellicved the time was coming when the country would not stand for any pollution of streams whatever. Afternoon Session. In the afternoon an address was given by Mr. W. (Irounds, chairman of tho Dairy Produce Control Board, on the operations of the board and tho important '‘improvements it has already made in connection with shipping, rates of insurance, and more up-to-date carriage of their produce to the Home markets. Mr. Grounds also stated that he considered that Press criticism of the board was at times bordering on , unfair tactics.
