HORSES AND MOTORS
TRANSPORT IN ENGLAND A revolution in transport has taken place during the last 10 to 15 years, but few people seem to realise its full extent. Some striking figures have been supplied by the Ministry of Transport, says the Rural Industries. The number of horses and motor vehicles and their tonnage was counted on 13 roads in various parts of England, in 1911-12 and 1922. For every 100 horse vehicles on these roads before the war, there were only 32 in 1922; and for every 100 tons drawn by horses before the war, only 15 tons were carried in 1922. Meanwhile the number of motor vehicles has increased five-fold, and lhe tonnage carried by them eight-fold. In 1911-12 there were - bout 2000 motor vehicles passing daily on these roads; in 1922 the number was over .10,000. The tonnage carried by them was 4270 tons in- pre-war years, and 33,000 in 1922. Whereas horses were used for 60 per cent, of the traffic on these roads in 1911-12, horse vehicles numbered less than one-tenth of th? total, and the tonnage drawn hv them weighed less than one-thirty-fifth of the total for 1922.
