NEW LAWNS

This should be put down as soon as the weather breaks. The soil (as has been previously stated) should be. turned up as early as possible so that a couple of crops of weeds may be destroyed before the seed is put in. Level the soil with a rake and then roll it with a heavy roller, so as to make the ground fairly solid. After rolling it twice go over the ground again with a rake and level as carefully as possible. Then give it another rolling, and finally level again with a rake. The soil should then be hard, with a couple of inches of loose soil on top. Then sow the seed. This should be done if posible just before rain. As the. edges of the. lawn have to be cut later mark along with the back of a rake and sow a liberal allowance of seed along this line before attempting to sow' the centre. Allow plenty of seed, as the birds are bound to take some and others may not be covered and not come, up at all If allowance is not made for this the lawn will be thin and weedy. After the seed is sown (it should be sewn as evenly as possible) give the lawn another rake to make sure the seed is rcj/rly all covered. Do not r-.li ic ffltrwards. This is not ncimssary and will co a lot of harm if a dry spell th.ould sei in after the sowing. Where water is available it will help the seed to germinate if the soil is kept moist (not wet). This should not be necessary unless the weather becomes dry again. On light sandy, peaty, or pumic land, lawns may be. laid down almost at any time, but on a strong land (particularly clay/ this is the best time of the year.
