MOTOR BOAT NOTES HANDICAPS FOE TO-MOEEOW (By “Gunwale.”) A very pleasant evening was spent with the members of the Cruising Club on Thursday of last week. Leaving Plymouth Street groyne at 7.30 p.m., a run. was made to Mosquito Point, where the billy was boiled, and supper enjoyed round the camp fire. After supper a sing-song was held, and the boats left for home at 11 o’clock. It was a most enjoyable evening, and it is to be regretted that more advantage is not taken of our beautiful river. On the run home the boats were illuminated with Chinese lanterns, and the reflection of these in the water was a pretty sight. The following boats took part in the run: Pike, Boomerang, Manu, Karewai and Kaipaki.

Last week-end, both the Pike and Boomerang were up-river on a cruise. Last Saturday’s racing was again disappointing, owing to the slow times registered by all the competing boats. This was, no doubt, caused by tho strong run out that was in evidence.

The local speed boats seem to be having more than their share of illluck at present. Last Saturday’s tryout did not eventuate owing to Little •Tim catching lire on her way to tho starting point, and during tuning up operations on the One Step she broke an inlet valve, which will necessitate her laying up for some time. Miss Virginia was shipped this week to Auckland, where she will race for the Masport Cup to-morrow and thero is every chance of her being successful. Her owner is very confident, and, given a fair run and barring acidents, hopes to return with the coveted trophy, and the speed championship of New Zealand.

Last week the J. and J. competed in the Auckland championship and was placed third, the rough water being against her doing her best. Her crew had a hard task to keep the water from stopping the engine. It is rumoured that M. Dingle’s new flier should be seen in action very soon, and she is expected to be among tho “forties.” Here’s hoping so. “Gunwale” asks: Docs the Motor Boat Club realise the true role of tho Helcan Challenge Cup, which was competed for at the regatta?. If so, why lias it been kept so quiet? Surely something should be published concerning the conditions governing it. Let us move and make this club second to none in New Zealand; it can be done if we only work together and see that everyone gets a fair deal, and all pull together for the sake pf the sport in general. Helean Cup Contest. Saturday’s racing will be the second round for the Helean Clip, for boats under 20 miles per hour. The following handicaps have been declared:— Ferro, No. 9, handicap 14niin. lOsecs, start at 3 p.m. Tangahoc, 21, smin. 44sccs, 3.8 26 p.m. Karoro, 10, smin. 14secs, 3.8 56 p.m. Karewai, 1,4 min. 14secs, 3.9 56 p.m. Clinker, 24, 2min. 42secs, 3.11 28 p.m. Petrel, 30, Imin. 44secs, 3.12 26 p.m. Pastime, 26, Imin. 36secs, 3.12 34 p.m Stella, 22, 36secs, 3.13 34 p.m. Cyclone, 3, scratch, 3.14 10 p.m.
