AN INTERESTING CARD

SMALL BUT EVEN CUP FIELD. FINE SPRINTERS IN THE FLYING. ■ TRACK IN GOOD ORDER. (By “Early Bird.”) Form at Hawera to-day and to-mor-row will be of particular interest to Wanganui sportsmen as giving a guide to the form of horses engaged here a fortnight hence, but for those unable to do the trip the notes and comments in these columns the next few days will be some compensation, in addition to i giving an indication of how the form I is working out. To-day’s racing pro- ; mises to be keen and illuminative in I view of coming events, with good Hehls engaged in the majority of the events. A special train leaves Wanganui at 7.50 a.m. to-day and to-morrow, arriving at the course At 11.21 a.m. and leaving there on the return at 5.35 p.m. The track is in excellent order after the rains. The iir<t race starts at 11.45 a.m. i This is the OHAWE HURDLES. •Of 200 sovs; 1% miles.) Bustler raced well but unluckily at Takapuna last week, and if he is given time to get over the trip from Onrhunga may be expected to go well. Uncle Dave seems to be the danger to the northerner. In having the open sprint the second item on the programme, trouble will come early for the majority of punters, for there is a fine big field in iMe FLYING HANDICAP. •Of 330 sovs; six furlongs.) Pelham is a good sort and if welt placed at the turn may win. Lady Bentinck must command respect, while Oration seems to have Jost his punch, but it cannot be forgotten what hr did on this course just twelve months ago. Sleet was too sore at Trentham. and the easier going will suit her. The others not mentioned are all possibili ties, with First Acre the pick, although he will probably be kept for the Juvenile. a much easier rare for him. It looks as if the placed horses will connfrom near the top of the handicap, and The Lamb and Bonogne may be among them. Surveyor ran a great race at Trentham on the concluding day. Bright Day has another engagement, but if started here he would count a lot of support, for he is a consistent performer, the omy doubt about him being the distance. Star Ranger appears to be coin•jig right again, and his defeat of Star 5t ranger a few days ago will be the

Deans of making him favourite. Juraahi. Town Bank and Clarinda »ave all been reported sore, but the asier going will suit them. Town lank raced well at Takapuna, and 'larinda has a couple of pounds less han she won the Maunu at u Cup with, .nd there is no Enthusiasm or Ngata

Horomea has her full share of weight but may go well. If kept for this Curraghmore must be given a better show than Grand Lupin, and if this pair contest the Nolan Cup then Gold Collector may not belie his name. The field is a poor one outside of the two topweights, and the punters task of sorting them out will be made much easier after the scratchings are posted. NOTES AND COMMENTS (By “Early Bird.’’) Weights for Wanganui J.C. first day. February 18, should make an appearance on Monday morning. Handicaps ’ fur the Wanganui Trotting meeting are due at lhe same time. The ex-Hawera jockey. R. J. Flower, joined W. H. Dwyer’s stable recently, and the other morning the local mentor had Flower. D. C. Watts and J. Barry riding work for him. Roy Reed is to ride Star Ranger in r the Cup to-day, and H. Goldfinch will be on Town Bank. W. $. Bagby’s mounts include Avola and Curraghmore. Nolferange has been withdrawn from his Flying Handicap engagement at j Hawera to-day. All is not well with D the gelding. b An innovation at Hawera to-day that will be appreciated by a considerable percentage of the racegoing public will , be the ten shilling totalisator windows, a facility which has not been provided ' by the club for several years. . Heavy rain was falling in Hawera I yesterday, and a continuance last night would make the track heavy. On the ' other hand a let-up would see the track in fine order.

It was stated in Hawera yesterday that in all probability Bright Day would start in the Egmont Cup and not in the open welter to-day. Punters on the course to-day should have a good look at the horses doing their preliminaries. A number of horses have been sore through racing on hard tracks, but the soft going to-day will be more suitable. In particular, have an extra good look at Clarinda, the best treated horse in the Egmont Cup. Other horses that will go better under to-day’s conditions are Diogenes, Town Bank. Muraahi and Surveyor, but there are also many others. Town Bank ran third in a field of three which contested the Clifford Plate one mile and a half at the Auckland summer meeting, but there were two good ones in front of him. Count Cavour and Rapine. However, he was not very far away at the finish, and this performance evidently appealed to many for h.e »-*** well ut the

Takapuna Cup. He looked well and ran well, but failed to concede Desert Glow 111 b. On Saturday he was again made third favourite for the Takapuna Handicap, but was again beaten. The going was a bit too hard for him, for he is not altogether a sound horse. The Egmont Club’s track will suit him. The committee of the Cheviot Trotting Club has received a letter from the Minister of Internal Affairs regarding the transfer of the club’s permit from racing to trotting, stating that he was in communication with the president of the Racing Conference in connection with the subject. In the opinion of the club, the attitude adopted by the Racing Conference is at variance with the provisions of the Gaming Act Amendment Act, 1924, and it has been decided to take further steps regarding the transfer.
