BETTING TAX

DEPUTATION TO MINISTER. HON. CHURCHILL’S VIEWS. WASTEFUL FORM OF EXPENDITURE. Received December 23, 2.35 p.m. (Router). LONDON, Dee. 22. The proposal to tax betting was again submitted to the Treasury. The Right, Hon. Winston Churchill received an influential deputation, headed byLord Newton. Air Churchill explained that his reception of the deputation did not mean he or the Government had reached any decision favourable to a tax on betting. Certainly no Government would contemplate any stop which might load to an increase of a wasteful form of expenditure, which was an evil in social life. Tie promised to examine all aspects of the question impartially.
