WANGANUI ASSOCIATION NOTES AND COMMENTS. Ladder and button challenges have fallen off a good deal lately, and it is hoped that members will show more keenness in the New Year. As there will be no more ladder matches played until about the second week in January, the ladder as it now stands is as follows: —Ladies: Dr. Easterfield, Miss Cal ver. Men. —Lampe, Powdrell, Barkman, hlarshall, Tukeroi Hawkins, Jones, Boddy, Purcell, Hounsell, Gourley. Etiquette of Tennis.—Never pass behind a court while a rally is being played. It may seem that it is an unimportant game. It may not be so to the players. It is the worst possible form to dispute the decision of an umpire. Wanganui East Games. Second round: Hawkins beat Walker 9—4; Barnes beat Lind 9—B. Entries for the ladies’ and men’s doubles handicaps close on Saturday next. The Annual Tournament. A meeting of the Association ’s management committee was held on Monday evening, when matters in connection with the forthcoming tournament were dealt with. It was decided that late entries be received up till 5 o’clock on Wednesday, Dec. 30. Judging by the number of entries received this tournament promises to be a great success. Mr. Lane was appointed superintendent of the tournament and Mr. Billows “umpire collector.” During the month of January no Association matches will be played except by mutual consent. Wanganui Club. This club’s courts were crowded on Saturday, and owing to the number of matches some players had to go short of practice games. Although the writer is strongly in favour of matches having preference, the state of affairs on Saturday gave reason for serious consideration of the problem of catering not only for matches, but also for practice games. The only remedy is Association courts, and I think the time is now ripe for making a move to get these. Not like the ones the Association had on St. John’s Hill, but on a ground which would be suitable for tennis and which would belong to the Association.

Other bodies have been raising money with the idea of providing grounds, why should not the Tennis and Cricket Associations do likewise? If the sport is to become popular it must have a permanent home, where tennis matches and tournaments can be played and where the public know they can see good tennis when they feel inclined.

The club’s second team managed to retain the B. grade cup by defeating St. John’s B team. The match was quite interesting, and although Wanganui Club won by three matches the result was in doubt right to the finish as the last two matches were won by Wanganui by a small margin only.
