Sir Ernest Rutherford arrived in Dunedin from Christchurch by motor last evening.
Constable N. Straffen leaves Wanganui to-day for Ohakune, where he will be on relieving duty for a month.
Among the guests at the Rutland Hotel are Messrs A. J. Van Osselder, and J. Brincourt (Paris).
The Governor-General and Lady Alice Fergusson arrived in Dunedin by the express from Christchurch yesterday afternoon.
The retirement of Mr F. Meadowcroft, who has managed the business of Cadbury’s in New Zealand since 1890, marks the close of a Jong connection with a business which has grown from small beginnings to importance in the Dominion. Mr Meadowcroft was born at Halifax, Yorkshire, in 1867. He came out to Melbourne, and later to Wellington. His successor, is Mr George Sara, of Christchurch, who has superintended the firm's South Island business hitherto.
Air T. H. Lowry, resident of Levin, died there at the beginning of the week, after a short illness. Deceased was one of four sons of Mr and Mrs John Lowry, of Pctone, where he was educated. Although only 37 years of age, his experience in the wool industry had been both wide and varied. After two years’ residence at Patca Mr Lowry became instructor in woolclassing at the College and Technical School in Wanganui, and also at the Hawera School. Later he received an appointment with the buying depart ment of Messrs A. S. Paterson and Co., in which capacity ho had acted for three years prior to his illness. He leaves a wife and one child.
