V.R.C. THIRD DAY THE NIGHT PATROL WINS AT WEIGHT FOR AGE. FAST TIMES REGISTERED. Received Nov. 5. 7.30 p.m. MELBOURNE. Nov. 5. The weather for the third day of the Flemington' races to-day was fine and bright. There was a large attendance, great interest centring in the Linlithgow Stakes race. Records were established in the first three events. In the Hurdles Investigate was prominent throughout and won easily. He was ridden by Inkson, who won the Cup Steeples on Agricola. Cyden. on the outside rail, was always at the front in the Mimosa Stakes and won easily, giving trainer Scobie his fifth win of the race. The Night Patrol led over the last seven furlongs in the Linlithgow Stakes, which was a good race. The Hawk was never dangerous and finished fifth. The Night Patrol also won this race last year. In the Veteran Stakes Solidify, who was fifth in the early stages, finished best and won narrowly. He is trained by the ex-New Zealander D. Lewis. In the Linlithgow Stakes the fractional times were: First two furlongs, 25?. sec., next two 24jsec., last four 47Isec. There was an exciting finish in the Carnival Handicap, the imported Preston Grange winning in the last stride. The first two furlongs took 26J, the next four 50f, and the last four 494. Preston Grange was trained by the ex New Zealander Lou Ribertson. There was a good race for the Oaks, the favourite, Ethelton, being narrowly beaten by Red Shank, who is owned by Mr. E. [Per Press Association.] CHRISTCHURCH, Nov. 5. The weather was fine for training at Riccarton this morning. The work done was on the plough except where otherwise stated. Soiferite beat Prosperity over seven furlongs in 1.35 1-5. Runnymede was a little better than Oreum over a mile in 1.45 1-5. Rapine ran a mile and a-quarter in 2.11 1-5, Guldspur six furlongs in Ll 7 2-5. Sunart beat Clarinda over seven furlongs in 1.32 1-5. Centrepiece beat Rivalry in a mile spin run in 1.46. Star Stranger and Tiega took 1.47 to cover a mile. Deucalion and Aferry Day were well matched over a mile and a-quarter on No. 7 track, run in 2.7. Te Kara put in a working gallop over a mile and a-quarter, taking 2.45 2-5. ' aptain Sarto accompanying over th* last six furlongs. Peneus ran six furlongs in 1.16. Commendation led Decoy Bird and Vertigern in a sprint down the straight. Tanadeos, Phoenix Park. The Banker, and Shining Armour finished in that order at the end of a mile and a-quar-ter. run in 2.13. Victory Bond ran five furlongs in 1.2. Tresham covered nine furlongs in 2.1, finishing several lengths in front uf Kalakaua, whose rider lost a stirrup. Clareina ran five furlongs on No. 7 in 1.15 2-5. Inferno left six furlongs behind in 1.16 2-5. Sun Up easily beat Countersign over a half on the outside course in 49 3-5 «ecs. Royal Divorce easily beat Fool’s Paradise over six furlongs run in 1.17 Agitato beat Dazzling Light over a mile on the course in 1.45 2-5. Mandane covered a mile and a-quar-tcr on the course in 2.11. the last mile being done in 1.43 3-5. Footfall and Goldstep ran a mile and l-quarter, the last mile taking 1.44 3-5.

WINDBAG TIPPED BY SOAP BOX ORATOR. “Now that the elections are on, Windbag is a good tip for lhe Melbourne Cup.” Siauiing on i soap-box in the heart of Woolloomooloo, last week, “Dick” Orchard, Nationalist candidate for East Sydney, gave this advice. That started it! What might have been a fairly polite and sedate meeting, or perhaps, somctiiing a little different, became, instead, a merry and bright thrust and parry with wit as the foils. Humour flashed between the candidate and his audience; interjections, questions, posers anti puzzles rained upon him, but his smile and keen replies kept the ball rolling cheerily. In between the interjections he managed to sandwich snatches of policy. First ho told them that it was going to be a “clean, decent fight, with no kidney punches, for the East Sydney belt.” Then he proceeded to contrast union leaders of to-day, w r ho, he said, maintained peace and prosperity Tor their men, with others who preferred industrial strife. Hu specially mentioned Alessrs Walsh and Johnson in the latter category. That led to the British seamen’s strike, and while stating that he sympathised with the men in their claims, ho strongly attacked Alessrs Walsh and Johnson for fostering the fight in Australia. “Lang and Charlton should have taken the gloves off to Walsh and Johnson, and said, “It is not our dispute? If Australia is going to become the industrial stadium of the world, God help us.’ ”
