SUCCESSFUL JERSEY SALE

COW REALISES 400 GUINEAS. A highly successful sale of the Otterburn Jersey herd, owned by Messrs Mears Bros., at Walton, was conducted by the Farmers’ Co-operative Auctioneering Company Ltd. on Thursday. Buvers were present from all parts of the province, and so large was the crowd that the big marquee was too small to accommodate them, and the sale had to be conducted in the open. In opening the sale the veteran stock auctioneer. Mr G. F. McCullagh, ex plained that the sale was only taking place on account of the death of one of the partners. Messrs Mears Bros, had gone to considerable trouble and expense to get their herd together, and when purchasing nothing but the best would suit them. Buyers had a unique opportunity of purchasing some of the best blood in the Dominion. That long purses would be needed was soon made evident, the first cow being sold for 65 guineas, while her heifer calf brought 30 guineas, and as the sale proceeded prices rose. The top price realised was 400 guineas, which Mr F. W. Walters, of Waitoa, paid for the imported cow Goodwill Kuby. Bidding commenced at 200 guineas and rapidly reached the 300 guinea mark. A spirited duel between ATr Walters and Mr H. Watkin, of Takanini. resulted in the former having the cow knocked down to him, amid applause. The same buyer also bought a heifer calf from the same cow for 70 guineas. The next price was 220 guineas for Fox’s Freda, also purchased by Mr Walters, who also secured her calf for 50 guineas. Quite a number of other cows were sold for over 100 guineas, W’hile the average price paid for 22 cows was 87 guineas, four dry cows averaged 30 guineas, and 9 heifers 37 guineas. There was remarkable competition for this season’s calves, bidding reaching as high as 70 guineas, while the average price was 30 guineas. The 3-y ear-old bull Blonde’s Golden Sultan was sold for 30 guineas to Mr J. Colson, of Waihou. The elder bull, Otterburn Sultan, was passed in, while the younger bulls sold at from 30 to 41 guineas.
