KAI IWI

CONCERT AND DANCE. (From the “Chronicle’s” Special Correspondent.) Last Thursday evening a concert and dance in aid of the Kai Iwi School prize and picnic fund took place in the Kai Iwi Town Hall. The concert part, of the function was in the able hands of Swanker R. Bond, and, favoured with perfect weather, an audience which taxed to its utmost capacity the accommodation of the hall, greeted the performers when the curtain rose at 8 p.m. The programme was varied, and most attractive, and the keen appreciation of the large audience was evidenced by the fact that practically every item was cordially encored. Items by school pupils included pianoforte solos bv JMiss Maisio Trower, and choruses by the junior pupils and the senior girls, all of which were most heartily encored. Songs (all encored) were pleasingly rendered by Misses Edmondson and Joslin, Mrs Bond, and Messrs Bond, Watson and Edgar. A violin solo by Mr Austin, and recitations by Messrs J. B. Hogg and A. Newrick were also so much appreciated that the performers had to respond to undeniable encores. Miss H. Newrick most ably played the accompaniments for the musical part of the performance. At the conclusion of the programme, the chairman of the committee, Mr Huwyler, thanked the audience for their attendance, and expressed the committee’s hearty thanks to the performers, to the ladies who provided the refreshments, and to all others who assisted to make the evening so successful, as it undoubtedly was. At his invitation, the concert part of the function concluded with the rising of the audience to join heartily in the National Anthem. The floor was then cleared, and dancing was commenced to music kindly supplied by various city and local musicians, to whom arc due much of the evening’s success, and the thanks of the organisers. At some “wee sma ’ oor ayont the twal” the “last dance” was called, and so ended a function which financially, and in all other respects, was one of the most pleasing and successful ever held in the district.
