The growth of certain farm crops depends largely on whether or not th'-re is sufficient calcium or lime in the soil to meet the needs of the crop. In the case of lucerne for example, an acid soil cannot furnish the legume with the amount of calcium or lime needed, and thus the pliant suffers. The farmer must come to the rescue (on acid, soils) even before lucerne is sown, otherwise the crop may fail.
