THE ADVENTURES OF POLLY, PETER AND WALLABY

You will remember that Wallaby’s head poked round the door of the room while the chums were still wondering what had happened to him. You can imagine their astonishment when they discovered him. Their mouths opened wide, and they could do nothing but stare.

Of course Wallaby had to tell his story. It turned out that he had thought Richard must be in the Dogs’ Home and had gone to find him. You know all about the trouble Wallaby caused in the Home, but he remarked calmly: “I only knocked them all over and came away.’’

When Wallaby heard that the police were searching for him he was dreadfully scared: “ The question is, ” said Peter, ‘ ‘ How are we going to get you away?” “Yes,” echoed Polly helpfully, “that's the question! How are we going to get you away?” And they settled down and thought, very hard.

Their meditations were interrupted by the sound of loud knocking on the door. Didn’t they jump! Their hearts almost stood still with fright. They thought it must be the police, and you can see poor Wallaby’s tail disappearing out of the picture. But it was only the baker’s boy, after all.

At last Peter had an idea. “I shall have to get him away in the yacht after dark,” he said, “and you others had better go straight home and wait for us there.” You can see the others did not like the idea at all, but as Richard remarked, ‘ ‘ What else was there to do?’ ’

That night the Chums wrapped Wallaby in a big sheet and got him aboard the yacht. Poor Wallaby would put his head out to say good-bye, and Polly was quite frightened in case he should be seen. “See you all at home,” Peter shouted, and the little boat flew away over the dark waters and was hidden from sight.
