AN APPEAL TO CLUB LADIES A certain Club in Wanganui has issued to members a letter dated October 19th, in which it is stated that if Prohibition is carried it “ will have the effect of preventing the sale of suppip of spirituous liquor in the Club premises ” and that “ The Club Would have to be closed unless the Members were prepared to pap a much higher subscription for fewer privileges in order to meet current expenses. The letter also appeals speciallp to ladp users of the Club Librarp informing them that “ us a consequence of National Prohibition being carried, the Club would be unable to afford the privileges at present enjoped bp them (al the annual subscription of 10/-). ” This letter admits, in effect that (a) those writing it consider that the main business of the Club is selling liquor, (b) that the liquor is sold al such a profit that oilier Club services arc furnished al a loss (c) that the profits on liquor sold are used to provide a librarp service in direct competition with cvcrp bookseller in the town and with the Wanganui Public Librarp. The Public Librarp gives two books for a 10/- pearip subscription, the Club three books and a magazine. 7he Club Executive therefore ask the women members to vote for the continuance of the liquor traffic that wreck die lives of wives and mothers, blasts homes and robs little children, in order that thep map, at the expense of drinking Club members, have . one book an d one magazine more than can, on a business basis, be supplied for 10/- per annum. If there has ever been a more sordid appeal made to women bp those advocating Continuance, than this appeal bp the Executive of this Club, n>c have pet to find it. Surelp no self-respecting Woman will accept the implied insult that she is (a) member of a Club making a MAIN business of liquor selling, and (b) that she is willing Io enjop librarp privileges based on profiteering in the Club bar, (c) that for the sake of an unfair advantage in librarp privilege, she is willing to ignore all the evil the liquor traffic does.
