BACK TO HIS HOME TOWN. INTERESTING INCIDENTS. [Per Press Association.] NELSON, Oct. 80. ' Sir Ernest Rutherford was accorded a great reception by a large gathering jof old boys of Nelson College, and* he spent a pleasant time meeting many friends of his school days. Mr C. H. Broad, the present principal, recalled tho day when Ernest Rutherford arrived at the college. He was described at that period as a fair-haired stranger who had the presumption to join the fifth form on coming to college. In a short time it was realised that the headmaster’s classification was a wise one. Sir Ernest Rutherford, in reply, satd it gave him great pleasure to visit his old school. He instanced the large number of distinguished men who had come from Nelson College. It was a record of which any school should b< proud. At noon Sir Ernest Rutherford addressed a gathering of the Boys and Girls’ Colleges in the College assembly hall. He was accorded a great reception. Sir Ernest Rutherford also visited his birthplace at Spring Grove, and at Foxhill School was shown the original school register in which his name appeared during the time he was a scholai there.
