BOXING

NOTES AND COMMENTS DOINGS AT BULLS. Dicky Vercoe boxed a draw with Tommy Griffiths (of Dunedin) at Blenheim. last Wednesday evening, after a good light. Taking a line through this, Mark Carroll is the logical contender for Lin Robinson’s title, as he certainly made Vercoe look cheap. Carroll is a much improved boy since June, and Lin Robinson will have to indmgu in his box oi tricks to beat the anganui boy. The la us who suw young Gastein box were greatly taken wiln mm when he defeated leddy Mercer alter a close light on the same night that Carroll rodght .V crcoe. As amateurs, V urcuu put Teddy Mercer in tne hospital lor over a inuntn. .Livingstone beat Gastein in the Wellington Championships, and Carroll m turn knocked out Livingstone in the second round at the Wellington Centre Championships in Blenheim in July. Carrell ioiloweu this up by easily outpointing Vercoe over tun rounds in his nrst professional light.

On Tuesday evening last over one hundred spectators roiled up to witness the try-outs between the two schools run oy Tom Bouter. The following exhibition bouts of three 2-minute rounds took place:—H. fciteere v. E. I‘crbes; C. ioroes v. Tapp; Roy Forward v. Jock McPherson; x>ill bray v. Jack Meads; Bert Means v. Jxingi; Phil Morse v. Jack Johnston. Aller the bouts Mr McManaway presented the medals won at the recent Wanganui tournament by Jack Meads (Bulls;, Alan Peck (Bulls), Bill Gray (Wanganui), Ginger Verraix (Wanganui), while Bill Gray also won President W . E. Quigley’s medal for the most scientific boxer, and midgets H. Steere and E. Forbes also received gold medals from the money collected on the stage at the Wanganui tourney. Mr McManaway then addressed the meeting, and a new Boxing Association was duiy formed, to be known as the Raugitikei Amateur Boxing Association, with its headquarters at Bulls. A strong committee was formed and officers elected as follows: Patron, Mr W. B. Glenn, M.P.; Mr McManaway was unanimously elected president, and the vice-presidents included Messrs J. B. Gaisford, Bert Ereckleton, Ted Wilson, Mr Mase, Rev. Jones, Sid Stecre, Charlie Price, and several others. Mr J. B. Gaisford donated £5 for medals, Mr Freckleton a medal for most scientific boxer at, first contest, and Mr S. Steere also donated a medal. The secretary was instructed to apply to the New Zealand Amateur Boxing Council for affiliation. Mr Souter thanked Mr McManaway for his valuable assistance in making the evening a success, and the Rev. Jones for his kindness in placing the hall at the boxers’ disposal. The Rev. Jones, replying, stated he was only too pleased to help any clean, healthy sport along. The boxers were entertained at supper after the meeting, leaving for home at 11 p.m. Mr Bert Meads was awarded the gold medal kindly donated by Mr McManaway for the most improved boxer in the Bulls boxing school. A Maori boxer who rejoices in the name of Jack Johnston is a very promising boy in the Bulls school. Mark Carroll, who has rested since he beat Vercoe, will start training again next week. Mark wishes to thank the secretary of the Y.M.C.A. for the kindness in allowing him to use the gym. in the mornings, while he was training for his fight. King Elliott, a fine hefty specimen of a light-heavy, started at the Aramoho boxing school last Wednesday. Also, there were G. Fromont (feather), Sandy Fromont (light), Connell, Tim Healey, Reg. Gibbs, and Andrews—all likely boys. Roy probably be matched with Cadman (Patea). Reg. Giles wants a fight, also Charlie Forbes—6st. 71bs. Sid Gray is joining up with Souter’s school also, and should be fit very soon. Ginger A’erran is looking for the writer of last week’s notes. Box on, Ginger!
