THE TURF

NOTES AND COMMENTS (By “Early Bird.") Poverty Bay concludes to-day. New Zealand Cup next Saturday. No racing (except a minor Hunt Club meeting) after to-day until next Saturday. when the big Ellerslie and Riccarton gatherings commence. The Melbourne Cup meeting opens tolay at Flemington. One of the prinSipal events to-day is the Cantala stakes, run over a mile at special weights. The only horse engaged in the Can:ala in which New Zealanders are interested is Palelight (Absurd-Star-glow), who was bred by Mr W. G. Stead. On Tuesday the Melbourne Cup is to be decided. Pilliewinkie, sold recently to Sir Samuel Hordern, has a big task in front of him in being asked to carry 8.13, but on recent running at Randwick he has to be given a chance in the great Flemington race. As anticipated, the two-year-old Ngawati was too good for the dozen opposed to him in the Maiden at Gisborne on Thursday, and well ridden by dark Barry the youngster won cleverly. Jack Barry received a further lift along on the jockeys’ list by riding three winners. R. Reed will again be on Mimetic when he goes to the post for the Stewards’ Handicap next week. At Trentham Reed rode 411 b. overweight, but at Riccarton expects to reduce it to lib., in the Stewards’. H. Burrows, who went up from Bulls with the pacer Cora Tacks, did not return home after the Auckland meeting, but decided to remain at Epsom for the Otahuhu meeting next month. Burrows has the mare looking and going well, and it will not he for want of condition if she fails to land a stake. Burrows has James Conway in work at Bulls, also a maiden pacer. J. Cameron told a Sydney writer that it was practically certain The Hawk would not be a runner at Flemington. The gelding appears to have recovered from the trouble caused through overreaching in his races at Randwick, but his owner is not yet quite satisfied with him. There is a possibility of The Hawk racing in New Zealand again shortly. He has been entered for the Railway Handicap, and the two w.f.a. r act»s —King’s Plate. 1 mile, and Clifford Plate, 1J mile —at the Auckland R.C. Xmas meeting.
