HUNTERVILLE.

GENERAL NEWS. (From the “Chronicle’s” Special Correspondent. Tho official opening of the bowling green and croquet lawn will take piece next Wednesday. The official opening of tho Rata Rifle Club’s range takes place to-day. The Railway Department has just completed the erection of two houses of up-to-date design for members of tho local staff. The Rev. John Paterson addressed a meeting on Wednesday evening. His subject was “Prohibition.” BOWLINC- CLUB SPECIAL MEETING A special meeting of the Hunterville Bowling Club was held on Wednesday, Mr James Howie presiding over an attendance of 14 members.

It was decided to open the green on Wednesday, November 4. Mr T. G. Taylor was elected a ir?m ber. It was decided that the Green Com mittee interview the Tennis Club as to the removal of sand in the pavilion, and that the president interview the president of the Tennis Club concei n ing the crowding of the Bowling Club’s room when visitors are present. The delegates to the amalgamated conference reported as follows: “Your delegates attended a conference on the 22nd inst. of the Bowling, [Tennis and Croquet Clubs’ delegates, i No final decision was arrived at, but a motion was carried that a member o> each delegation meet and draw up proposals to submit to a further conference. Your delegates are opposed to going any further at present i.i the matter of amalgamation as the hav monious attitude necessary to make such a scheme a complete success was absent, the other clubs apparently cuing prepared to join in certain minor matters but not in a true amalgamation. We would, however, make the following suggestions to the Bowling Club, which have been based on the average attendance for the past five years. We estimate the general expenditure on rates, insurance, repairs, paths, fences, etc., at £34 Ils 3d, and consider that each club should pay a third share of this amount, viz., £ll J Os. In addition to this, when the pavilion is painted the cost should be ’ divided between the three clubs. We estimate the Croquet Club’s porportion for the up-kcep of their lawn at a least £27 per annum, and as they state they wish to pay their fair share, wc recommend they should make an annual payment of this amount, to be proportionately increased should the caretaker’s wages be increased. We also recommend that they should pay £2 lUs per annum for use of the present plant and the Tennis Club pay 10s. This would make a total payment from the croquet of £4l in addition to interest on amount owing and a payment of £l2 from the Tennis Club in addition to interest on amount owing. In the event of new mowers, etc., being purchased we suggest that the Croquet Club should pay 10 per cent, of the cost of same for five years to compensate for wear and depreciation when used on the crequet green, such plant, however, to be the absolute property of the Bowling Club. We also recommend that the Tennis and Croquet Clubs should be asked to arrange for guarantors for their own accounts and repay to the Bowling Club the amounts owing by them, the Bowling Club to give them permanent lease subject to the above stipulations.” The report was adopted. PERSONAL The many friends of Mrs R. Dukeson w-ill regret to hear that she is at present very ill in the Palmerston North Hospital with pneumonia, following on a recent operation, from which she was making a satisfactory recovery. The members of the Hunterville Croquet Club have forwarded to Mrs

Knight at New Plymouth a handsome solid leather handbag as a token of esteem from her many friends in the club.
