WANGANUI TECHNICAL COLLEGE

ANNUAL CONCERT The annual concert of the Vanganui Tchnical College, held last evening, was as great a success as usual. An excellent programme was submitted to a very largo and appreciative audience. Tho standard of the entertainment was a credit not only to tho pupils, but to the teachers, who were responsible for their training. A lengthy programme was run through without a hitch. Following on an overture by the school orchestra came a tableau and gymnastic display by Musters ( ./ie, Upton, and Harold Dover, the work of the last named on the parallel bars being very good. Miss Linda Price played a charming “Caprice” as a piano solo, and earned well i cited applause. What is a novelty nowadays w-s an excellent exhibition of club and wand drill by a troupe of girls. R. Davis played “Cavatina” as a violin solo an 1 Miss Eileen Anderson, a winner at the competitions, received applause for her skipping dance. J. Pargeter, also a competitions winner, recited “The Meanderings of Monty,’ ’an appropriate selection for election time, and it was duly appreciated. The girls’ choir, winners of the choir competition, sang charmingly four different pieces. Much credit is due to Miss Duncan, who is responsible for their training. A vocal duet, “Fairy Ways,” was pleasingly sung by Misses Roma and Eva Thompson. One item that was very popular was a quartette of Fijian boys with ukelcle and guitar accompaniment. An exceptionally pretty and dainty item was a gavotte danced by the girls. A piano duet by Misses Linda Price and Grace Higgs met with due appreciation, as also did Bruce Grieve’s recitation “Revenge,” and ho responded with a humourous item as an encore. Other items on the programme were an exhibition of marching, items by the orchestra and an excellent cornet solo by that past master of the instrument, Mr Geo. Buckley.

The programme concluded with a very amusing sketch of Dickens’ characters, entitled “Pickwick in Trouble.” The audience thoroughly enjoyed the dialogue, the appearance, and the misadventures of the notorieties. R. Allen was Pickwick; H. Thompson, Sam Weller; L. Satherley, Winkle; V. Carmody, Tupman; R. Annabell, Snodgrass; R. Rogers, Nupkins, the lawyer; D. Good, Jinks, the lawyer’s clerk; M .Miles, a footman; J. Alp sergeant of police; F. Barry, A. Bartlett and P. Burke, constables; and Miss Molly O ’Brien, a lady.
