'THE SCARLET FLEET’

AN ADDITIONAL BUS SERVICE TO BE EXTENDED TO NO. 3 LINE. SUNDAY RUN TO CASTLECLIET. The success and continued popularity of the bus services to St. John’s Hiil and Smithfield has convinced the Wanganui City Council that further extensions arc necessary, and tho decision has been made to purchase another bus in the immediate future, which it is hoped to put on the road in time to meet the demands of the summer passenger traffic. 'Phe bus it is intended to secure, a “Chronicle” reporter was assured yesterday, will not have to be of a smaller type than those at present on the road. Indeed the Council could well afford to have a larger vehicle, as at present during certain periods of the day two buses have to run to and from the “Hill” to accommodate the passengers. 'Phe Tramways Committee is fully alive to the position with which it is faced in regard to transportation or residents to and from the various suburbs, and realises that there are areas that yet remain to be “tapped,” which would probably prove profitable if exploited. That the committee is using its best endeavours to provide an efficient and economical service for the ipublic generally is exemplified by the I fact that on Monday a new service will |be inaugurated that will prove of ad [vantage to residents on No. 3 Line. |The service will be a through one from /the Fox Road terminus at Springvale. The bus will follow the present route from the latter point to the Post Office, and from there will proceed across the Town Bridge and out to the railway crossing at East Town Road, on No. 3 Line. The same ground will be traversed on the return journey, but instead of waiting at the usual stopping place at the Post Office, the bus will continue on up the Avenue, cn route to Fox Rood. At present the bus will not bo available for tho No. 3 Line service at lunch hour and five o’clock, as the other services require all vehicles during these periods, but when an additional bus is secured it is probable—providing, of course, there is sufficient inducement —that this matter will receive immediate attention. The tramways manager (Mr A. E. Cheal) proceeded over the new route on Wednesday, and has prepared a time-table, which is published in this issue. The Sunday morning service to Cr. • I tiecliff will be instituted next Sunday morning, and buses will leave from •Aramoho and Wanganui East at appointed times. This service will be in i substitution for the tramway service utilised last summer, and a universal and reasonable fare will be charged for the ride out to the seaside resort. This departure by the Tramways Committee should at once prove popular, and there is no gainsaying the fact that its action will be justified by the returns that will be received throughout the summer months.
