MARTON

“NEW TOYS,” A DOMESTIC COMEDY. TOWN HALL TO-MORROW NIGHT. (From the “Chronicle’s” Special Correspondent). Joseph Hergeshcimer, the novelist, recently said of Richard Barthelmess: ‘‘lie has a mind of his own, and he uses ii.” Barthelmess in his latest photodrama, ‘‘New Toys,” which will be screened at the Marton Town Hall to-morrow night gives a performance which more than confirms Hergesheimer’s diagnosis. His portrait of a young husband deserted by his wife and faced with the problem of caring for their new baby is one of tho most intelligent bits of work we have ever seen on the .screen. Incidentally, “New Toys” serves to introduce Mary Hay (Mrs. Barthelmess) to photoplay patrons as a leading woman. Since her marriage to Dick, back in. the day when “Way Down East” was being filmed, Miss Hay has given her work to the speaking stage. She returns to the screen, however, in the role of the errant wife, lured from home by stage ambitions and false friends. Her excellent work assures her of a permanent position among the screen’s luminaries. “New Toys” is a picturisation by John S. Rober'son from the stage play of the same title, which had a long run at the Sam II Harris Theatre in New York recenil/. The story was written by Milton Herbert Gropper and Osc ;r Kammerstein, 2nd, and produced by Inspiration for First National. MARTON LAWN TENNIS AND CROQUET CLUB. The report stated that tho club had grown considerably during the year, there now being 155 members on tho roll. At the end of last season the club lost ft valuable member, namely' Mr. Whitcombe, who did so much work in connection with the construction of | the new’ courts. During the year the balance of tho Hereford Street property was sold at the very satisfactory figure of £230, out of which sum tho mortgage of £l5O was repaid. The club is deeply indebted to those members who signed the guarantee to the Bank of New Zealand to enable the club to have sufficient funds to construct ‘ho new courts. To show the club’s appreciation, your committee have considered it only right to endeavour to lessen their liability as far as reasonably possible, and have taken up shares in the Wellington Building Society, which will compel the club to make tho saving of £lB annually. Tho shares are estimated to produce £l5O in 6£ years. The only liftbility of the club it its overdraft, which now stands at the very reasonable figure of £274 8s 4d. owing to the efforts of the Marton Sports Grounds Finance Council. The club is very grateful to the members of the associated clubs and the people of the district whose support and assistance made the effort the groat success it was. The club’s share of the profits wfts £132 18s 7d. As to the grounds your committee is not so enthusiastic. Mr. Henderson, of Henderson’s Nurseries, has kindly given his opinion as to what should be, done at the close of the season, and it is to bo hoped that his recommendation can be carried out. The present revenue | is not sufficient to permit any great [expenditure for this purpose, and your | committee urge that members will sanction subscriptions being raised to ' enable tho necessary work to bo done. I As to the ftsphalt courts, your eommit- , tee regret to statp that it is the unanimous opinion both of Mr. Henderson and Mr. Brandt that they are practically useless. After much pressure the contractor was induced to * resoal them, but the work was not a success, and he now refuses to do anything further to them. The uiaXWz has, how-

ever, been referred to the club’s solicitors. The club wishes to thank Messrs Henderson tend Brandt, whose services were given free. During the year the caretaker, Mr. L. A. Stubbs, resigned, and his duties have been taken over by Mr. R. T. C. Scott. In conclusion the club has to thank its lady members for giving afternoon tea. during the season. Thanks are also due to the press for publishing the results of the various matches. The report and balftnce-shect were adopted. Election of Officers. Tho following officers were eelcted: Patron, Mr. R. E. Beckett; president, Air. F. J. Christensen; vice-presidents, Dr. Harpur, Messrs J. H. McCrea and J. R. Howard; club captain, D. Howden; secretary, Mr. M. C. C. Fenwicke; treasurer, Mr. F. C. A. Wood; committee, Mrs. Stevens and Messrs Baird, Gover, C. Gibbons, Carter and Leonard. Opening Day. Tho fixing of opening day wfts left in the hands of the committee. It is hoped to open about the middle of November.

New Members. Thirteen new members were elected. Members’ Subscriptions. The annual subscription was fixed as 'ollows:—Tennis: Ladies, £1 10s; men, £2 10s. A provision was made for junior members under 18 at the beginning of the financial year as follows: Girls, 15s; boys, £l. GLADIOLA SHOW FOR MARTON. A meeting was held on Tuesday night to consider tho advisability of holding a giutuoia show in Marion. Air. 1< D. Henderson, jI.S.G.D., wftited on iho meeting and explained the objects of tho scheme. The rose show, winch. is to be held on November 19, he said, did not fit in properly with lHu season and the bulk of the prouuce exhioiis are not ready. The object of holding a gladiola show was to caver specially for that branch of flowers and io include other exhibits, such as peas, which are not reftdy at .his time of tho year. If the show eventuated it would be the first of its .md to be held in New Zealand and it would reflect great credit upon Marton for having been tho first town to si age such a show.

Mr. Henderson personally guaranteed 2000 blooms for the show and offered a trophy for the best exhibit. He also recommended ft special class for amateurs.
