1 IMPROVING TILBURY DOCKS. j The Port of London Authority has now ar- ' rived at a decision on the matter of a new ■ entrance lock at Tilbury Docks, which has enf gaged its attention for some time. Many | schemes were considered, the question of the ■ best position of the lock presenting a diffiI culty, and it has been decided that, from many points of view, especially from of the navigation of vessels entering from the river, the entrance shall be constructed at a site about 1200 ft above Tilbury Ness. The entrance is designed to be 1000 ft long, 110 ft. wide, with a depth on the sill of 45ft. Gin. below Trinity high water mark, and the estimated cost of £1.680.000. It may be mentioned that the existing lock at Tilbury is 7000 feet long and wide, with a depth of 44ft on the outer sill and 38ft. on the inner sill. Certain of the vessels now using Tilbury Docks are over 630 ft long and 751 t beam, so that the present entrance is being used practically to its full capacity, and in proposing to embark upon a new entrance of the dimensions specified and upon the new dry dock which has been decided on, the authority considers that it is legislating in such a manner as to allow ample margin for development for many years to come.
