THE SEAFIELD TITLE.
SEVENTY-YEAR-OLD CLAIMANT. A ROMANTIC STORY. Received October 29, 12.30 a.m. LONDON, Oct. 28. The title of the nineteen-year-olfl Countess of Seafield, a peeress in her own right, has been challenged at the court sessions in Edinburgh. Alexander Grant, a retired tutor, aged 70, declares that he is the son of the seventh Earl of Seafield, whereas the Countess is the only child of the eleventh Earl. Grant alleges that the seventh Earl, when Viscount Rcidhaven, in 1846, married by verbal contract aboard a sailing vessel Caroline I Stuart, youngest daughter of the eleventh Lord Blantyres. Because she was about to become a mother she was carried ashore at Banff on the back of seamen and gave birth to a child tho same night. Grant was that child. The marriage was later celebrated in London, but every effort was made to hide the original birth. Tho baby was handed to the gardener of Nordon Castle and was given a University education by the aid of money provided by his foster parents.—Aus.-N.Z. Cable Assn.
