DEEP RAYS
FOR MALIGNANT DISEASE A SURGICAL EXPERIMENT [Per Preus Association.) CHRISTCHURCH, Oct. 28. Reporting to the North Canterbury Hospital Board to-day, Dr P. C. Fenwick. stated that he would like to record one case, which, as far as he could ascertain, was the first case to be treated in New Zealand. Some months ago the board suggested to him that if during an operation a surgeon should decide that the operation was too dangerous to bo continued, the patient might be at once transferred to the Radium Department for deep X-ray treatment through the open wound. No opportunity for doing this had occurred till this month. A doctor transferred a patient direct from the theatre to tho department for dcey X-ray treatment. This was administered, and the patient was sent back to -the theatre for the completion of the operation, as great difficulty in giving this treatment was the fear of damaging the skin. This new method of treating advanced disease through an open wound appeared to him to open up a new avenue of hope for cases of advanced malignant disease.
