THE FRENCH CRISIS

PRESSURE ON CAILLAUX RESIGNATION WANTED STORMY MEETING OF CABINET. By Telegraph—Per Press Assn.—Copyright. Reuter. PARIS, Oct. 26. The newspapers are absorbed in the political crisis and express the opinion that, after M. Caillaux’s speech, only a mirticle can prevent the Cabinet’s resignation. M. Herriot, in a speech, declared that the time for the physicians had passed, and it was necessary for the surgeons to intervene. As the result of M. Briand strongly supporting M. Caillaux, because he does not desire a Ministerial crisis at the

time of the meeting of the Council of

the League of Nations in Paris a crisis will possibly bo prevented or at least postponed. There was a stormy scene at a meeting of M. Painleve, Briand and Caillaux, and the latter's chief supporter, M. Laval, in the Premier’s private room before the Cabinet meeting. Ac cording‘to the Havas Agency’s repoit M .Painleve asked M. Caillaux to rd» sign. The latter refused, whereupon M. Painleve asked M. Caillaux to rethat he would be obliged to submit the collective resignation of Cabinet. M. Caillaux objected to this course being adopted, ladding that the idea was clearly to enable M. Painleve to reconstruct Cabinet, omitting M. Caillaux.

The trouble ended by the adoption of a suggestion of M. Briand that the question be deferred pending discussion by the whole Cabinet. / «

NO DISAGREEMENT WITH M. CAILLAUX STATEMENT BY PREMIER. Received October 27, 7.30 p.m. PARIS, Oct. 26. M. Painleve categorically denies a story of disagreement with M. Caillaux. On the contrary.’ tho Government was considering a new financial project which it hopes will be acceptable to the majority of the Chamber. RESIGNATION AGAIN PREDICTED EFFORT TO EJECT CAILLAUX. Received October 27, 8.5 p.m. PARIS, Oct. 26. Well-informed circles consider it certain that the Cabinet will resign e» bloc to-morrow, apparently with the object of getting rid of M. Caillaux. — Aus.-N.Z. Cable Assn.

FRANC RECOVERS SOMEWHAT. LONDON, Oct. 26. The French franc in London has wecovered to 112.12 francs. FINANCIAL JUGGLING. INQUIRY TO BE i HELD. PARIS, Oet. 26. At a meeting of Cabinet, M.
