THE NOMINATIONS
The list of the names of candidates nominated for the general election will make interesting reading to-day and will serve to remind the electors that one week hence they must record their votes. It will be for the electors to say in whose hands the conduct of the country’s business is to be placed for the next three years. Each individual elector has exactly the same share of responsibility, and it is a very grave responsibility indeed, for the verdict of the polls may mean either progress for the Dominion or trouble and retrogression. A rough analysis of the nominations shows that in some twenty-seven electorates there are triangular contests, the candidates representing the Reform, National and Labour Parties. These will be the most important'contests of all> The real issue lies between the Reform Party and 'the Labour Party, but the . position may be complicated by the Nationalists. Not by any stretch of imagination can it be supposed that the Nationalists could be returned in sufficient strength to become the dominating party in Parliament; indeed, they virtually admit that themselves. But if in some of the twenty-seven electorates they either poll enough votes to secure election or else enable Labour to add to its strength they will help to place the Dominion at the mercy of Socialist extremists. The Nationalists are a source of danger. The way to safety is to vote Reform, thus ensuring the existence of a strong and stable Government. Every vote for Nationalism in a triangular contest is a vote against the Government and a help to Labour.
