THE WANGANUI SEAT
(To the Editor). Sir, —As an old Liberal I will admit openly that I changed my coat years ago. The reason was that the old Liberal Tree became so infected with codlin moth that neither spraying nor fumigating would induce it to produce fruit. At the present moment the tree (under the microscope) shows signs of bare vitality, and that is all. The fifth of next month will see it quite dead, and the remains rooted out and burnt in the rubbish heap. I am glad to see from the published reports of his speeches that Mr Veitch, who calls himself a Liberal (but who is anything according to the state of the political barometer) recognises the position and is therefore playing into the hands of the Reform candidate. Although Mr Veitdh started his political career as a Labour supporter, he would not dream now of assisting the Labour candidate. In adopting this attitude Mr Veitch shows much wisdom, as he can then leave the political arena with a sort of clean recoid. His utterances on the subject of (inter alia) finance are, of course, only camouflage, and his humourous way of telling the electors that he is down and out and on that account they should Vote Reform. Mr Veitch has read the writing on the wall, and is now doing the generous and manly thing by helping the cause of the Reform Party. I am sure the electors will follow Mr Veitch’s lead and by voting for Mr Coates 1 candidate in the electorate thus place Wanganui on a level with the other veil represented cities of the Dominion. —I am, etc., HAPPY NOW. Wanganui, October 24.
