FIREMEN MISSING
THE CLANSMAN HELD UP. SEQUEL TO DONKEYMEN’S DISPUTE. [Per Press Association.] AUCKLAND, Oct. 26. Owing to the absence of members of the stokehold crew at sailing time, the Northern Company’s steamer Clansman was uniable to sail this evening for Russell and northern ports. There were 30 passengers on board. The delay follows upon tho recent trouble [regarding tho duties of donkeymen on New Zealand steamers. As a sequel to the refusal of men to operate valves, pumps and other machinery, legal action is being taken by thu iJabour Department against local officials of tho Seamen’s Union, i The case is to bo heard in Auckland lon Wednesday, and the greaser and I three firemen of the Clansman have been subpoenaed to give evidence for i the union. As the ship would not be I back in Auckland until next Friday, they were paid off on Saturdlay, and this morning four men were signed on in their place. Tho Clansman was timed to sail at 5 o’clock this evening, but at that time there was no appearance of the new men. After waiting for some time to see if they would show up, departure of tho ship was postponed until tomorrow evening.
