ORDERS FOR BRITAIN
20 LOCOMOTIVES FOB ARGENTINA An order for 20 locomotives for the Central Argentine Railway has been placed with Messrs. Beyer, Peacock, and Company, of the Gorton Foundry, Manchester. The Ottoman (Smyrna-Aidin) Railway Company, a British corporation operating 380 miles of standard gauge track in Turkey-in-Asia and of which Lord St. Davids is president, has also, says 1 1 Modern Transport,’’ placed with the same firm a contract for an exceptionally large locomotive of the “Garratt” type, consisting of a double engine. These orders have been obtained in the face of very keen German competition. Demands for Welsh athracite coal are being received from British Columbia, although the distance by way of the Panama Canal is nearly 6000 miles. Shipments are already being made. Welsh coal has never been transhipped in any great bulk to so distant a region. A Glasgow Corporation Committee accepted a tender of Messrs. William Arrol and Co. for the building of a new Kelvin Hall to cost £162,000. The Swansea School Buildings Committee accepted the tender of |lcss.|*.. David Griffiths and Company, Swansea, of £70,966 for a new municipal secondary girls’ school.
