BOXING

REVIVAL OF SPORT IN WANGANUI NOTES AND COMMENTS. The executive of the Wanganui Amateur Boxing Association has every reason to be pleased with the first fights put on under its management. There is no doubt, arrangements for the running of the tournament were splendid, and reflect great credit on Secretary Fromont. He had everything in capital order, and the committee, from president to secretary, worked like Trojans. The amateur bouts were of the very best, and no time was lost between the contests, with the result that fans were on their-toes all the time. The professional bout was not as good as was expected. Mark Carroll, who made his first appearance, proved to be a Hast, clever boy, and made Vercoe look cheap. The Wanganui boy was in great form, but did not have to rely on stamina as he simply boxed to instructions and won by a street, to the disappointment of a number of sports who bucked the Blenheim boy. Mark will bo good. Carroll was the first to enter tho ring, attended by Tom Souter (principal), Dick Seden, Morry O’Brien and Teddy King, while Vercoe had Mr. Wareham (principal), Strickland. Thomas and Charlie Breed (of Wanganui). When Announcer Fry was introducing the bovs, he stated that if Ver coo won, he (Vercoe) would meet Robinson for the Now Zealland championship. Vercoe, a well set up, nuggety chap, looked well, showing a lot of muscle, while Carroll also bore a welltrained appearance. Being tall and thin, Carroll simply made Vercoe look like ar~draught horse, and he did not have to fight very hard to win. Carroll will fight Robinson in tho near future for the |itle, and his chances of winning it are very bright. Carroll’s corner outgeneralled the opposite corner all the way.

The Bulls boys—Jack Meads, Alan Pick, Bert Meads and the two little midgets , all gave good accounts of themselves. Jack Meads is U well set up welter with a punch in either hand. Ask Scown! Pick and Jack Meads won their fights, Meads by the k.o. route.

“Ginger’’ Verran boxed well on little training. Remember, “Ginger,” it pays to train. Walking down Lover’s Lane won’t win fights! Phil Corliss, ever willing to assist the Association, came forward to fight on a week’s training and ran second. If Phil trains he is a hard boy to beat.

Good luck to Bill Gray. He was awarded tho special medal for tho most scientific boxer. Gray boxed well. Guarding, footwork, head moving, ducking, and clean punching were all in evidence. Gray is a clean living boy who is a credit to tho boxing game.

Tho following boys from Souter’s schools competed on Saturday last:—• Mark Carroll (professional) and Corliss, Verran, Morse, Alan Pick, Jack Meads, .Bert Meads, Bill Gray, and the two midgets (Steere and Forbes) from Bulls.

Murk Carroll’s next fight will probably be Lin Robinson for the feathertitle. Charlie Cann wants someone to try to take his crown, and Ern Y r oung wants to meet any heavy, Parker for preference, when he returns to country. The 'house was a good one and tho writer counted twenty-three ladies around the ringside. The fair sex seemed to enjoy the bouts very much. One got over enthusiatic and shouted: “Knock him out, Murk. " The boys from Souter’s Wanganui school will go to Bulls on Tuesday and spar exhibitions there. The presentation of medals won will take

place, also the McManaway medal will be awarded for the most improved boy in the Bulls school

Says tho Napier “Daily Telegraph "i “When the Territorials were in camp in "I’rentham last week an amateur boxing tournament was held and at least one surprise was effected. This was in tho defeat of Driberg, from Napier. In young Lewis, of Hastings, Driberg was meeting a practically unknown quantity, but after getting his bearings, Lewis treated Driberg to quite are artistic trimming. This proves that there’s a lot of good talent about if it can only be oftearthed. ’ ’

(Youg Geoff Lewis, of FordelL and now of Hastings, was taught boxing at the Wanganui Collegiate School by Tom Souter, where jie won his weight two years in succession. He is s elever, scientific boy. Drfberg is a well-known Napier amateur boxer with a good record).
