ANCIENT VOLUME

FIRST GUIDE-BOOK. Tho first English guide-book appeared nearly five hundred years ago. It was called “The Way From the Land of Engelond unto Sent Tamez in Galiz.” It was written for pious folk who wished to journey to the famous shrine of St James in Spain. In Elizabeth’s time it became the fashion for young men to leave England on a grand tour of the Continent. It was for their benefit that Howell wrote his “Instructions for Forrein Travel! ” The modern guide-book is really the creation of Karl Baedeker, who commenced to publish them a century ago. The originator of English guide-books was Mr John Murray. The first of his hand-books (for Holland and North Germany) appeared in 1836.
