THE ADVENTURES OF POLLY, PETER AND WALLABY

We left the chums wondering what the newsboy’s cries were all about. You will notice they are still mystified. But where has Polly gone and what is she up to?

Now Polly was more than merely curious about the newsboy, and while the others were sitting still doing nothing to solve the mystery, she darted out and bought a paper. “Bravo, Polly!” cried Peter. “That’s the best way to find out all about it.”

“This morning a curious animal, a cross between a Wallaby and a Kangaroo, dashed into the Dogs’ Home,” read Peter. “He seemed to be in search of something, and, despite the keeper’s efforts, could not be induced to leave.” “Why, it must be Wallaby,” exclaimed Peter. You can see what the chums think of it.

“After all efforts had failed to get the Intruder out by peaceful means,” continued Peter, reading, “the police were called in to arrest him. Round and round the Dogs’ Home they chased him, until at last he was driven into a corner. . . .

“. . . And a great fight took place,” went on Peter. “The policemen dashed in repeatedly, but the animal proved a wonderful boxer, and, after knocking them all in a heap on the floor, he took one flying leap and escaped. ’ ’ You will notice how delighted the chums are, especially Gwendoline and Richard.

But the chums’ delight was soon damped. “The police are now searching for him,” Peter continued to read. That wasn’t such good news, and Richard and Gwendoline looked very sad. “I do hope they won’t catch him,” salt) Polly. And not one of them saw Wallaby’s head peeping round the door.
