ENGINE LUBRICATION
ROOM FOR IMPROVEMENT.
A prominent engineer connected with one of the large oil companies said recently that the lubrication provided in the average motor engine would not be tolerated in any other machine. Dilution of the oil with fuel and water rob it of much of its lubricating value and solid impurities, which are too fine to be caught by a wire mesh screen, clog the oil passages, preventing the proper functioning of the circulating system. That the importance of remedying these unsatisfactory conditions is recognised by automotive engineers is indicated by the adoption of oil filters and air cleaners as factory equipment by a number of car manufacturers in their new models, and by the development of one maker of a method of eliminating from the crankcase the products of combustion which seep past the pistons. Adequate lubrication of the wearing surfaces in an automobile engine is a difficult problem, particularly during the winter months. It is being studied scientifically, and progress is being made towards its eventual solution.
