A MAORI WAR VETERAN

DISTINGUISHED VISITOR FROM ENGLAND. GENERAL SIR CHARLES CLARK. [Per Press Association.] WELLINGTON, Oct. 22. Geenral Sir Charles Mansfield Clark, G.C.8., G.C.V.0., and his niece, Lady Tomlin, wife of Sir Thomas J. C. Tomlin, judge of the High Court, Chancery Division, arrived by the Corinthio from London this morning. Sir Charles, who is 86 years of age, is an old Maori War veteran, having served with the 57th Regiment, “Diehards,” in New Zealand from 1861 to 1866. Ho proposes to tour the North Island, first visiting tho old battlefields upon which he fought so many years ago. He will then do the South Island. He was met on arrival bv Colonel W. L. H. H. Burgess, C. 8., C.M.G.., D. 5.0., acting-Commandant of the Now Zealand Defence Forces and bp SergeantMajor Bezar, of Wellington, who is one of the four remaining members of the “Diehards” still living in New Zealand.
